I am running XP home. Lately my computer has slowed down and I noticed in Task Manager that the file MsMpEng.exe uses up to 99% of CPU resources even while I'm not doing anything on it! I can turn on my computer and just sit there and watch Task Manager do it's thing and it seems that MsMpEng.exe is the only file that uses most of the CPU resources. I have run virus checkers and CCleaner and defrag. My question is: What is making MsMpEng.exe use so much CPU resources and is there anything I can do to prevent it?

Is MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) performing a scan when this is happening?

You can try uninstalling and reinstalling MSE.

In Windows Task Manager- Applications

Task Status
Microsoft Security Essentials Running
MsMpEng.exe-Windows Internet Explorer Running

These are the only two things running as write this. When I go to the performance tab, the CPU usage varies from zero to 100%. Is this normal?

You didn't answer my question. Is it running a scan while the MsMpEng.exe is hogging the CPU.

I checked on my moms computer (she runs MSE) and on her P4 2.8 HT it can go as high as 60% when running a scan. What speed is your CPU?

Task status it is normal for Microsoft Security Essentials if it is not minimized.
Regarding MsMpEng.exe-Windows Internet Explorer...I don't know what that is all about. It should say the website title.... http://localhostr.com/files/ovWQ5ys/taskmanager.png
