Think I need some help on this problem

Working with Windows 7, the computer boots up to the login page as normal. I sign in, the normal log in sound is replaced with what sounds like an explosion, then the machine freezes. I have killed power and rebooted in safe mode and scanned with MacAfee, nothing comes up. Rebooting again normally causes the explosion sound and freezing.

Any ideas where to start troubleshooting? My computer literacy level isn't the highest, so probably better to assume I don't know things. Appreciate any help the forum can provide.

Welcome aboard Posted Image

Restart computer in Safe Mode with Networking.

Download Security Check from HERE, and save it to your Desktop.

* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

=============================================================================

Please download MiniToolBox and run it.

Checkmark following boxes:
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
Click Go and post the result.

=============================================================================

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/ to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Be sure to restart the computer.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

=============================================================================

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.

IMPORTANT! If for some reason GMER refuses to run, try again.
If it still fails, try to UN-check "Devices" in right pane.
If still no joy, try to run it from Safe Mode.

Thanks for replying to the thread! I appreciate the help. Logs are posted below.

For full disclosure: I downloaded all executibles on my laptop and put them on a flashdrive, as the computer in question is my father-in-laws.

I ran security check and minitool box with no issues.

Anti-Malware ran, with a pop up saying "The Scan completely successfully. No malicious items were detected"
I restarted the machine, but could not enter safe mode, windows just loaded normally, except the machine froze on the welcome screen, after the password was entered. I powered the machine down, and restarted, this time getting the option to restart in safe mode (with networking)

GMER did not perform a quick scan when it first opened, as far as I could see. After running the scan manually, I get a pop up saying "GMER hasn't found any system modification"

So far all looks clean.

Since you're running McAfee Internet Security, which includes firewall make sure Windows firewall is OFF.

Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

=============================================================================

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner

  • Disable your antivirus program
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Click Start
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Scan archives
  • Click Start
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push List of found threats
  • Click on Export to text file , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.

Ok.

Temp File Cleaner was run without issue. Computer was restarted in safe mode with networking.

I cannot get Eset to run. The window that poped up filled a quarter of the screen and it was clear the start button needed to be scrolled to, except there was no way to scroll down or right.

I restarted the machine to try again. Couldn't access safe mode by hitting f8. Entered the login password, the screen froze. Powered the machine down, rebooted into safe mode with networking. I get the same result. No bars to scroll the window. I tried clicking on the window to activate it and using the arrow keys, it didn't work. Maxmimizing the window just produces a grey screen, save for the part of the window I can already see.

Again, appreeciate all your help with this.

Go Start>Run (Start Search in Vista), type in:
msconfig
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).

Click on Startup tab.
Click Disable all
IMPORTANT! In case of laptop, make sure, you do NOT disable any keyboard, or touchpad entries.

Click Services tab.
Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services
Click Disable all.

Click OK.
Attempt to restart computer in Normal Mode.

NOTE. If you use different firewall, than Windows firewall, turn Windows firewall on, just for this test, since your regular firewall won't be running.
If you use Windows firewall, you're fine.

Same problem?

On restart to normal mode, I now get past the login screen before the system freezes. The wallpaper loads, no desktop icons load. I do get the normal four chime windows logon sound, however.

The cursor is an animated blue circle that spins around counter clockwise. It also freezes in animation. I cannot move the cursor with the mouse once this happens

Turn it off.
Open the case, get a can of compressed air and clean it well inside.
If it has separate video card reseat it.

Ok, finally got a can of compressed air. Inside looked clean but sprayed anyway. Video card also looked steady, but was reseated.

The computer now starts up normally: there is no explosion sound and no freezing. Thank you!

Next set of questions: Do I try running the Eset scan now? And what do I need to do with the startup and services tab from msconfig? I'm assuming that I need to enable them one at a time and restart to see if it freezes the machine, but I'm not doing anything until told to do so.

Wonderful :)

I'm assuming that I need to enable them one at a time and restart to see if it freezes the machine

For starters re-enable all of them, restart and see what happens.

Done and the machine is still working. Thank you again!

So what do I tell my father in law the issue was? Loose hardware? Something in the temp files?

Good news :)
