I have a Compaq Presario CQ5306UK Desktop PC with windows 7, which I have had for over a year with no issues. I recently went travelling for 6 months and on my return have this issue. I can't say for certain but I think it was working for a few days on return but it may have been from when I first started using it again so I'm not sure if this is from lack of use for 6 months or what.

Whenever I try to connect USB devices I get the message "USB Device Not Recognized - One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it"

My USB mouse, keyboard and speakers still work fine. But whenever I try to connect my camera, my USB card reader, my Iphone or Ipod (So any other USB device I own) I get this message.

I have tried connecting my camera on a friends PC and this works fine.

Searching on the internet I have tried a few things, I have updated all my drivers, I have tried unplugging my PC for 30 minutes, none of these have any affect.

Another potential solution I have seen is to uninstall all USB devices using device manager and then to unplug for 30 minutes. I am unable to do this one as my mouse and keyboard are USB, and there annoyingly are no PS/2 ports on this computer, so can only get so far down the list before mouse and keyboard stop working.

I really hope someone has some idea how to fix this and it's not a sign that some vital part of my pc is dieing!

Thanks in advanced for any help with this!

Have you tried upgrading the chipset driver via http://www.intel.com?

Was pretty sure I had, but double checked and used the driver update utility on the Intel site which confirmed that it is up to date.

Have you tried connecting these devices to all available USB ports? I'm guessing you must be having around 4 USB ports and the facility to introduce Front Panel USB ports from the mobo.?

and there annoyingly are no PS/2 ports on this computer

Are you sure about this? Even the most recent motherboards sport a PS/2 port, if not two.

I have tried connecting the camera etc in the USB ports at the back that the mouse and keyboard work from with the same problem, and have tried the mouse and keyboard in the front ports (which I usually use for camera and ipod) and they work fine.

Well I've looked pretty hard for them and cant seem to find any. Even looked at the pc spec

and no mention of any there either!

It would appear that your back USB ports are failing. Can you clean the ports out with a can of air and use a paint brush dipped in Alcohol to clean the contacts?

Sorry think that might have came across wrong. The mouse and keyboard work both from front and back USB ports, and my other USB devices work from neither.

Do you still think I need to clean the back ports?

Ok I have tried this on all ports and the same thing is still happening, mouse and keyboard will work in all USB ports, other USB devices work in none.

Then your computer is having issues powering the devices that are connected to the computer such as your camera and other devices not including your keyboard.

Do the devices that do not work have a power cable that you can plug into the wall?

I have sometimes this problem too. Windows 7 would recognized the original usb port that the device was working property not on any other port. Windows 7 will have to load the drivers for that device on every single port but not the original because its all ready there.

The main 2 are camera and Iphone, my camera only has a removable battery not one that is charged through a plug in wall, Iphone obviously connects through same port to the plug in wall as it does through the usb.

coxchris, how do I get Windows 7 to load the drivers onto the other ports?
