Thanks for reading my computer's problem.

System: XP, SP2

It started with flashing desktop icons. When click any icon, it will run other program. If try to shut down computer by clicking "Start", a Pop-up shown "Running ....."

I disconnected the physical network cable, press the power switch to trun off the computer. Then, trun on the computer, boot into Safe Mode, did a system restore (? restrui.exe ?).

Now, the computer shows nothing on the desktop.
By the way, it still can boot into Safe Mode and shown a Safe Mode desktop with few icons.

Please help,
Thank you.

Hello,

Since Normal Mode is not cooperating, please generate the requested logs in Safe Mode.

Please follow the instructions in ==>This Guide<== starting at step 6. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.

Once the proper logs are created, then post them in a reply to this topic by using the Add Reply button.

If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the post and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the reply and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.

Please note that I am not a member of the Malware Removal Team and will not be assisting you in removing the infection. I'm simply helping you to post the information they need in order to assist you.

If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report your topic to the team members.

It took me a while to generate these log files.
These were what I did:

(1) When running Safe Mode with network, as Admin:
(1a) downloaded dds, gmer
(1b) run dds, save log files
(1c) run gmer but can not save log file because safe mode's 640x480 screen resolution can not display gmer's buttoms "Copy" and "Save".
(1d) Failed to change screen to higher resolution.
(1e) Turn off computer. And turn it on again.

(2) When running Safe Mode command prompt, as Admin:
(2a) run gmer.exe, still can not save log file because "Copy" and "Save" buttoms were not displayed.
(2b) Turn off computer. And turn it on again.

(3) Unplug network cable, and usb printer cable. Boot into Normal Mode XP, as UserOne:
(3a) For unknown reason, Avast anti-virus free version was stopped, can not start it.
(3b) Toolbar and all icons are shown on desktop.
(3c) Run DDS, save log files, run GMER, save log file.
(3d) Plug-in network cable, connect to network. I did not start any internet brower, but there was network activity, so I unplug the cable.
(3e) Turn off computer. Plug-in the network cable again.

(4) Boot into Safe Mode with Network, as Admin. Posted all the Normal Mode XP log files.

Thanks for the help.

Hello and welcome to BleepingComputer! :)

I am Blind Faith and I will be helping you out with your problem. Firstly, you should know that we are working with specific tools which are destined to idetifying the possible threats present on your system so I will analyze the results they produce.

As a start we need to have some more up-to-date logs than the ones you have already provided. The current state of the files on your system might have changed so we need to get a clear look on that step. DO NOT bring any changes to the system except the ones I tell you to as that may produce more damage than helping us.

If you will encounter a delay of over 2 days from me, please don't hesitate and private message me.
Do not wait to check your topic periodically and subscribe to the topic so that you can receive notifications regarding my replies.

Please generate another DDS log (download it from here if you haven't already) and post it in your next reply along with other changes that may have occured since you last posted.

Thank you very much for your patience.

Regards,

Elle

Blind Faith, thank you taking my case.

Is there way to delete those attached files which I posted previously?

This is the current status:
My computer boot into Normal Mode XP.
All icons and toobar are shown on desktop.
No flashing icons.
I double-clicked several icons, they ran the correct programs.
The "Start" buttom function normally.

Here is the current DDS.txt and attach.zip

Hi there :) ,

Firstly please provide another GMER log and post it into your next response.

Please open Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and update it from the Update tab.
  • Under the Scanner tab, make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • When finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box, then click the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked and then click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows the database version and your operating system.
  • Exit Malwarebytes when done.
Note: If Malwarebytes encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally will prevent Malwarebytes from removing all the malware.

Avast Free was running all the time.
Ran MalwareByte first then GMER.
Please see the logs in attachments.

Now, the computer looks like running normal, just slower.
Will the virus just hide itself temperaraly?

Before my first post, I did not do anything special to my computer, except did a system restore, ran safe mode, scan with spyzooka, dds, gmer.

After my first post, I just scan with dds, gmer, MalwareByte, and login to here.

Hi there,

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on this link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image
      icon on your desktop.
  • Check "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
  • Click the Start button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check "Scan Archives" and "Remove found threats"
  • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
    • Scan potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click List Threats
  • Click Export, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Click the Back button.
  • Click the Finish button.

Your Microsoft Windows installation is out of date. Using unpatched Windows systems on the Internet are a security risk to everyone. When there are insecure computers connected to the Internet, malware spreads faster and more extensively, distributed denial-of-service attacks are easier to launch, and spammers have more platforms from which to send e-mail. Whenever a security problem in its software is found, Microsoft will usually create a patch for it. After the patch is installed, attackers can't use the vulnerability to install malicious software on your computer. Keeping up-to-date with all these security patches will help prevent malware from reinfecting your machine. If you are not sure how to do this, see How to use Microsoft Update.

For additional information, be sure to read "Windows Xp Service Pack 3 (sp3) Information".

Then go here to check for & install updates to Microsoft applications.
Note: The update process uses ActiveX, so you will need to use Internet Explorer for it, and allow the ActiveX control that it wants to install.

Please reboot and repeat the update process until there are no more updates to install.

Hi there

We need to update several programs. :)

Important Note: Your version of Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 7 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "Java Platform, Standard Edition".
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • From the list, select your OS and Platform (32-bit or 64-bit).
  • If a download for an Offline Installation is available, it is recommended to choose that and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Posted Image > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs or Programs and Features in Vista/Windows 7 and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-7-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
  • If using Windows 7 or Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
  • When the Java Setup - Welcome window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.
  • The McAfee Security Scan Plus tool is installed by default unless you uncheck the McAfee installation box when updating Java.
Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications but it's not necessary.
To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter.
  • Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Your Adobe Reader installation is out of date.
Please visit Adobe.com and download the latest version. :)

================================================================================================================

Log looks clean...great job! :clapping:

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.
