Hello,

I run a Windows 7, 64 bit machine with all recent windows updates including SP1. I use Avira as an AV and MBAM for my Anti-Malware.

My reason for posting to this forum is the following:

About a week ago I received an extremely strange pop up message. I don't remember what it said verbatim, but it was along these lines:

"Windows will shut down in 10 minutes."

There was no option to postpone as there usually is with the Windows Update prompts, and I could only click "OK". This message also appeared in the top left of my screen while the Windows Update restart dialog box usually appears in the bottom right hand corner of my screen, near the clock. All these things made me to believe that this was NOT a windows prompted message and that this was a result of a worm/virus/malware. After doing some research I found some users mentioned the blaster worm, but not much information was provided for Windows 7.

Upon clicking OK, my computer did shutdown after 10 minutes and there was no way for me to stop it (I didnt try the shutdown timer in cmd prompt).

Upon restarting, I ran scans with AV and MBAM and found nothing. The symptoms I am experiencing now, and I have no idea if the two are related, are severely slow browsing speeds (tried using FireFox 5 and 6). I looked at the thread about the issue maybe not being malware and disabled some add-ons, but no difference. First 10 minutes are fine and speeds are very quick. I haven't noticed a significant drop in my download speeds (when downloading files) during the slow browsing, but my download speed varies so often it's hard to tell.

I have used a few tools such as rkill with guidance from a friend, but haven't done anything advanced. At this point, I am frustrated and might consider restoring my PC to factory settings (I have an HP, so I guess that means removing the partition with the OS) as I fear a trojan or worm. It may seem drastic, but I do a lot of work online and the browsing speeds are keeping me from doing my job well.

Any help or guidance is appreciated.

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.

IMPORTANT! If for some reason GMER refuses to run, try again.
If it still fails, try to UN-check "Devices" in right pane.
If still no joy, try to run it from Safe Mode.

this looks horrendous. Currently I am having terrible browsing issues. It was not this bad when I arrived home a few hours ago. Could this be because of bandwidth issues with my ISP?

Done. Seems to be running fine now. Possibly a bad extension/add - on? Either way, smooth surfing makes me a happy man. Thank you for your time and patience Broni!
