I was infected with the XP Antivirus 2011 virus and I am now dealing with the aftermath of it. I was able to remove most of it using exe.helper, malwarebytes, and Adaware. However I still cannot get on certain websites or it seems to reactivate it, I know its not the websites itself so I am figuring that it is only a trigger somehow.

I also noticed that my printers disapeared from my computer and I cannot reinstall them because the print spooler keeps deactivating a few seconds after I turn it on. I tried running a few fixes on that but nothing worked. So I am assuming it is still the virus.

I am very amatuer with computers but I can usually understand most instruction. I appologize in advance for any computer illiteracy. Thanks!

Welcome aboard Posted Image

Download Security Check from HERE, and save it to your Desktop.

* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

=============================================================================

Please download MiniToolBox and run it.

Checkmark following boxes:
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
Click Go and post the result.

=============================================================================

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/ to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Be sure to restart the computer.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

=============================================================================

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.

IMPORTANT! If for some reason GMER refuses to run, try again.
If it still fails, try to UN-check "Devices" in right pane.
If still no joy, try to run it from Safe Mode.

I don't see any AV program running but I can see some NOD32 leftovers.
What's the situation there?

Please download Rootkit Unhooker from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
Link 1 (.exe file)
Link 2 (zipped file)
Link 3 (.rar file)In order to use this tool if you downloaded from either of the second two links, you will need to extract the RKUnhookerLE.exe file using a program capable of extracing ZIP and RAR compressed files. If you don't have an extraction program, you can download, install and use the free 7-zip utility.

  • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to start the program.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check Drivers, Stealth, and uncheck the rest.
  • Click OK.
  • Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the report into your next reply.
-- Note: You may get this warning...just ignore it, click OK and continue: "Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself! It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?".

Sorry about the Nod32, I attempted to disable it with the guide that you provided but something must have happened and it didnt work. Should I try again?

I just need to know if NOD is your current AV program in working condition.

Download TDSSKiller and save it to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory (usually C:\ folder) in the form of TDSSKiller_xxxx_log.txt. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Sorry about the long delay in between posts, this is a work computer therefore I had a long weekend with the holiday. NOD32 is my current antivirus program, I also have malwarebytes and adaware on here but I have disabled them as startup programs and only left the NOD32 running.

Here is my kaspersky log, there was no infection found...

The computer is running fine at the moment, except for two things. What I am dealing with now is a printer problem and I cannot go onto a website called theChive.com... It seems to trigger the virus again everytime I go on there with this computer so I figured there was still some reminance of the virus still on the computer. As far as the printer problem goes, I had two printers installed on this computer but then after the virus got on here they both got deleted somehow. I tried to reinstall them but the computer kept freezing in the middle of the install. Then I realized the printer spooler was not staying on so I downloaded a new driver from the hp website but still no luck. I think the driver I downloaded is now gone from the computer as well. I dont really know how this stuff is getting deleted either?...

Thanks

theChive.com is just a website with funny pictures and videos on it, so when I get on there I can usually look at a few sets of pictures then the internet crashes and the XP antivirus 2011 pops up saying I have 100 hundred infections and I must buy this program in order to remove the infections. So then I have to restart the computer in safe mode, because I basically cant do anything when that happens, and run exe.helper then I restart again and run malwarbytes which finds like 1/2 a dozen viruses. Then I restart after removing them and run adaware which usually finds another 1/2 dozen or so viruses. Then after I restart the computer again its usually fine...

After this happened a few times with the website I havent gotten back on there again with this computer, however I can get on there with any other computer and there is no problem. Thats what lead me to beleive it was only a trigger for the virus and that the website itself does not contain any viruses.

Does any of this make sense or am I making too many assumptions?
