Hi,
I am running windows vista ultimate 64 and picked up the "security protection" malware. I have followed all of the instructions in the guide: Remove Security Protection (Uninstall Guide) here on bleeping, and it seems like it is successful until I reboot. Particularly the "defender.exe" ile and the Security Protection icon on my desktop respawn. This is leading me to believe that there is some sort of respawing location that I am missing when I clean. Has anyone else seen this issue and can you suggest some solutions?
Thanks!

Welcome aboard Posted Image

Download Security Check from HERE, and save it to your Desktop.

* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

=============================================================================

Please download MiniToolBox and run it.

Checkmark following boxes:
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
Click Go and post the result.

=============================================================================

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/ to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Be sure to restart the computer.

=============================================================================

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.

IMPORTANT! If for some reason GMER refuses to run, try again.
If it still fails, try to UN-check "Devices" in right pane.
If still no joy, try to run it from Safe Mode.

Thanks for the reply:

With the malware "unactivated" it will not allow me to run *.exe files

I can collect these logs in 1 of 3 modes:

1) with the computer booted up in "safe mode with Networking"
2) with the computer booted up in normal mode with the malware "activated"
3) with the computer booted up in normal mode with the malware "activated" AND Rkill used to stop the malware program

Which mode would you prefer?

Thanks

All right, here they are.

I could not get GMER to run. I added the (no so helpful) error message it gave. I did read online that GMER doesn't work on 64 bit Vista. I am not sure if that is true or not...

GMER:

Crashed: "428070y5.exe has stopped working
Aproble caused the program to stop working correctly.
Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

As a reminder, it seems like I can get the computer scrubbed, but then when I reboot it respawns. Also, I noticed today that my antivirus appears to be completely disabled although it looks like I was able to turn on the Windows firewall.

Thanks!

I did read online that GMER doesn't work on 64 bit Vista

Not true.
Did you?

IMPORTANT! If for some reason GMER refuses to run, try again.
If it still fails, try to UN-check "Devices" in right pane.
If still no joy, try to run it from Safe Mode.

I don't see any AV program running but we'll get back to it in a moment.

Yes, I did try to run GMER several times. It always posts 2 lines of statements and then crashes. I also tried to remove the "Devices" button, but it still crashes.

As for the AV, I was running McAfee until today (prior to collecting any logs). I removed it and tried to reinstall, but the removal was not allowed to fully complete and the new install was not allowed to complete either. That is why it is not showing any AV. It has been on there until today.

All right, I tried to deselect the "registry" checkbox and when I did, the program ran fine.

When I add "registry" back in it crashes after 2 lines: I stopped it after the first line which read:
Reg HLKM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Session Manager@PendingFileRenameOperations ???5ll??? ???????5???????????5?"??????????????? (and on and on and on)....

The second line which it crashes on reads:
Reg HLKM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Eventlog\System\Dx!* ki (not active ControlSet)

Download aswMBR to your desktop.
Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it.
If you see this question: Would you like to download latest Avast! virus definitions?" say "Yes".
Click the "Scan" button to start scan:

On completion of the scan click "Save log", save it to your desktop and post in your next reply:

NOTE. aswMBR will create MBR.dat file on your desktop. This is a copy of your MBR. Do NOT delete it.

OK, so I started up the compluter and ran the rkill application and the results were:

C:\windows\syswow64\wbem\wmiprvse.exe
c:\progra~2\mcafee\sitead~1\mcsacore.exe

This was the first time I saw these 2, so I included them in this post as an FYI

As for the aswMBR program:

1) downloaded to thumb drive
2) launched
3) clicked Y when asked if I wanted to download Avast virus definitions
4) clicked scan
5) the screen immediately went blank and then issued a BSOD
6) computer rebooted and ran rkill
7) downloaded aswMBR to desktop
8) ran (no request to download virus definitions this time)
9) clicked scan
10) the screen immediately went blank and then issued a BSOD

A Problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN_OR EQUAL

blah blah about if this is the first time and some stuff about removing/disabling new SW or HW, disBIOS memory options and the potential need to use safe mode

Technical information:
*** STOP 0x000000D1 etc

*** ataport.sys - address FFFFFA60009E4EE8 etc

On another side note: any time I add any type of malware cleaner, registry cleaner, the aswMBR, the icon showing on the desktop has a small shield added over the top of it that is very reminiscent of the fake shield that is shown on the lower right icon bar. I am getting the impression that the malware is detecting that certain programs are trying to attack it and flagging them...

With the information you have provided I believe you will need help from the malware removal team.
Please make sure that you read the information about getting started first.
Then start a new thread HERE and include or required logs.
Including a link to this thread will be helpful.

Good luck and be patient. Help is on the way!

Do you have a suggestion for which antimalware program I should buy for the future? If I am already using mcafee for my av, should I just expand it to include malware/spyware?

No need to buy anything...

- Avast! free antivirus: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
- Avira free antivirus: http://www.free-av.com/en/download/1/avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html (make sure to opt out from installing Ask Toolbar - it comes pre-checked)

Using Avast free myself.
