Hi,

I posted a topic called "Help! Slow Computer. Is My Computer Infected" http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic415402.html in the "Am I infected? What do I do?" forum. I was told to run numerous scans and to post logs. Unfortunately, after multiple attempts a program called Registry Mechanic was unable to be removed. I was advised to post a new topic in the Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs forum.

For the past few weeks my computer has been running really slowly. I installed DIV X plus and it installed a program called Registry Mechanic too. This RM program seems legit but it pops up and runs scans and asks me to remove the problems by buying their product. I have tried numerous times to delete this program but nothing works. I have uninstalled it from my computer many times but every time I start up my computer it is still there along with a program called Syminstallstub. I also have a tkbell pop up left over from a realplayer installation. I cannot remove it.

My computer runs so slowly that at times I play music and it sounds really slow, almost robotic. I have ran Super-antispyware, Malwarebytes, Ad Aware, Avira, Spybot Search and Destroy, and Spyware Terminator. All the other programs detect nothing.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/416815 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

Hi,

My name is Casey and I will be helping you with your malware problems.

Whilst I research the problems in your logs, it is very important that you do not make any changes to this PC. Specifically, do not run any further malware removal tools or try to remove anything yourself.

You may wish to "Watch Topic" so that you are immediately informed of any replies I make. I also ask that you reply to my posts within 5 days else your topic will be closed as stale.

Throughout the removal process, if you have any questions then you should ask them. If you are unsure of my instructions or something does not go as planned - then please tell me. Conversely, it is also important that you answer any questions I have and that you keep me updated on the state of the PC.

Regards,

Casey

If I have been helping you and I do not reply within 48hours, feel free to send me a PM.

Hi,

A few things first!

:step1: Multiple AV warning
I do not recommend that you have more than one anti virus product installed and running on your computer at a time. The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, then those products which do not encrypt the virus strings within them can cause other anti virus products to cause "false alarms". It can also lead to a clash as both products fight for access to files which are opened again this is the resident/automatic protection. In general terms, the two programs may conflict and cause:
1) False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.
2) System Performance Problems: Your system may lock up due to both products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Therefore please go to add/remove in the control panel and remove either AntiVir or Ad-Aware (most would recommend you uninstall Ad-Aware).

:step2: Uninstall SpyBot Search & Destroy
The general consensus is that Spybot S&D is outdated and cannot deal with today's threats. I recommend you uninstall it - you can always reinstall later. If you don't want to, at least disable it:

TeaTimer works by preventing ANY changes to the system. It will attempt to undo any fixes we run, because it blocks these fixes from running.

In order to safeguard your system from problems that can be brought on by a half finished fix, we need to disable TeaTimer. We can reenable it when we're done if you like.
  • Open SpyBot Search and Destroy by going to Start -> All Programs -> Spybot Search and Destroy -> Spybot Search and Destroy.
  • If prompted with a legal dialog, accept the warning.
  • Click Posted Image and then on "Advanced Mode"
    Posted Image
  • You may be presented with a warning dialog. If so, press Posted Image
  • Click on Posted Image
  • Click on Posted Image
  • Uncheck this checkbox:
    Posted Image
  • Close/Exit Spybot Search and Destroy

:step3: TDSSKiller
  • Download TDSSKiller.exe and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click TDSSKiller.exe to run it.
  • Under "Objects to scan" ensure both "Services and Drivers" and "Boot Sectors" are checked.
  • Click Start scan and allow it to scan for Malicious objects.
    • If malicious objects are found, the default action will be Cure, ensure Cure is selected then click Continue.
    • If suspicious objects are detected, the default action will be Skip, ensure Skip is selected then click Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now and allow the computer to reboot.
  • A log will be created on your root (usually C:) drive. The log is like UtilityName.Version_Date_Time_log.txt.
    for example, C:\TDSSKiller.2.4.1.2_20.04.2010_15.31.43_log.txt
  • If no reboot is required, click on Report. A log file should appear.
  • Please post the contents of the logfile in your next reply

:step4: We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from here
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
  • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
  • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized
