Dear Sir

I am on Windows XP, I got a virus which started a fake scan, I ran Malwarebytes (log attached), but this didn't help. All the programs like Word, Excel, Outlook, Firefox etc and the computer keep on crashing.

I ran combofix (I didnít know about the rule of not running Combofix until advised). Whilst Combofix was running I got messages about PEV.3XE and CATCHME.EXE. Combofix hasnít helped and the problems persist. The only way I can work on the computer is with safe mode without networking.

I enclose the DDS report as advised and attach the report from GMER

Hello, Welcome to BleepingComputer.
I'm nasdaq and will be helping you.

Your problem look similar to these Fake malware programs.

Follow the instructions on this page.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-win-7-internet-security-2011

You may be able to download the tools from your infected computer. If not then use a clean computer and copy the files to a flash drive as suggested on the link.

Just to make sure run the Malwarebytes again once you have completed the first steps of the fix.

When this is all done Run the Combofix tool and submit the log is you can.

If at any time you need help to proceed please ask.

Dear nasdaq

Thanks very much for taking the time to help me.

I am following the instructions but I cant get the Rkill program to work. I have tried all the download links listed on the Rkill page. When it starts, a pop up comes up "application failed" then the rkill window opens up but it closes after a short time without terminating any processes.

Sorry for this delay. I was out of town yesterday.

How the RKill is completed if not stop it.

Try to run this tool and submit the log if you can.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
  • Some Rookit infection may damage your boot sector. The Windows Recovery Console may be needed to restore it. Do not bypass this installation. You may regret it.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Note: If you have difficulty properly disabling your protection programs, refer to this link --> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

Do not mouse click ComboFix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Stop it.

Let see if you can run this tool and post the logs.

  • Download OTL to your Desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in

    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    c:\$recycle.bin\*.* /s

  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them all in.
