format before restoring image?

does a drive have to be formatted before an image is restored? or can the image write over
the info already there?

Well...I would think that it depends on what application is involved...and the ground rules established for use of same by the developers. Although I would think that any app would restore to either...I haven't tried a lot of them for creating images.
