My Windows XP became infected with the Security Protection Virus. I followed Bleeping Computer's procedures and first ran TDSS Killer, booted the computer in Safe Mode with Networking, ran Rkill, then ran Malwarebytes. This seemed to delete Security Protection, but problems remained. A scan with Spyware Doctor revealed PSguard in the registry, and because Spyware Doctor was unable to remove this, I had to use SmitFraudFix.

But sites continued to be redirected, and every time I run my TDSS killer after startup, the same redirector shows up. Scans with Spyware Doctor have shown a Win.32.AV virus and a Firewall bypass, but deleting them seems to do nothing. Malwarebytes, when not run on Safe Mode, is unable to start up, and when it is run on Safe Mode, seems to constantly be de-installed every time the computer starts up. It's not much of a problem re-installing it every time I scan with it, but it could be because of the virus. Nevertheless, Malwarebytes scans come clean. The Ctrl Alt Delete task manager shows the svchost.exe running.

I am currently on my Macbook Pro typing this.

Please help! Thank you!

THE DDS LOG IS BELOW. I HAD TROUBLE WITH THE GMER LOG. THE SCAN WOULD CLOSE BEFORE IT COULD FINISH AND I COULD SAVE IT.

Hi,

Welcome to Bleeping Computer.

My name is Shannon and I will be working with you to remove the malware that is on your machine.

I apologize for the delay in replying to your post, but this forum is extremely busy.

Please Track this topic - On the top right on this tread, click on the Watch Topic button, click on 'Immediate Email Notification', and then click on the Proceed button at the bottom.

Do Not make any changes on your own to the infected computer.

Please set your system to show all files.
Click Start, open My Computer, select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.

Now, let's look more thoroughly at the infected computer -

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from here:
  • Main Mirror
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Change the "Extra Registry" option to "Use SafeList"
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them into your reply:
  • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
  • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

Next, please download Rootkit Unhooker from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
Link 1 (.exe file)
Link 2 (zipped file)
Link 3 (.rar file)
In order to use this tool if you downloaded from either of the second two links, you will need to extract the RKUnhookerLE.exe file using a program capable of extracing ZIP and RAR compressed files. If you don't have an extraction program, you can downlaod, install and use the free 7-zip utility.

  • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to start the program.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check Drivers, Stealth, and uncheck the rest.
  • Click OK.
  • Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the report into your next reply.
-- Note: You may get this warning...just ignore it, click OK and continue: "Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself! It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?".

Once you have the above logs, click on the Add Reply button below, copy in the contents of the two OTL logs and the RKU log. Also include any comments that you might have concerning the infection(s) and the infected computer.

Hi-

Thanks for the reports. Need to get another look at what appears to be the main infection.

Please download aswMBR ( 511KB ) to your desktop.
  • Double click the aswMBR.exe icon to run it
  • If the AV Scan window appears, select (none).
  • Click Scan (if asked to update the Avast anti-virus definitions, click on No).
  • When you get the "Scan finished successfully" message, click the save log button, save it to your desktop (MBR.txt) and post it in your next reply.
  • It will also copy the MBR (Master Boot Record) into a file on your desktop as MBR.dat.

Please copy the contents of the aswMBR report into your next reply.

I downloaded aswMBR and tried to run the scan, but about 10 seconds into the scan, it suddenly closed. When I tried to run the .exe again, I was confronted with the message "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." This is very consistent with problems in the past. I would try running virus and malware scans, and they would suddenly close. And if I tried to run them again, I would get the exact same message.

The scan, however, did reveal one item in red text and labeled it "SUSPICIOUS" before it closed.

Do you want me to try booting the computer in Safe Mode, running RKill, then downloading aswMBR and run the scan?

Hi-

Download this > Inherit

Save it directly to your desktop
Drag and drop the aswMBR onto Inherit.exe.
Wait for it to say "OK"
Try running aswMBR again.

Please copy the contents of the aswMBR report into your next reply.

The same thing happened again :/ I dragged the aswMBR.exe on top of the Identity.exe and the Ok message came up. But still, the scan closed about 10 seconds after launching after it revealed a suspicious object. And when I tried to run aswMBR again, the same error message popped up.

Hi-

The scan, however, did reveal one item in red text and labeled it "SUSPICIOUS" before it closed.

- what was the item? did it give you a name and path?

Please download DummyCreator.zip and unzip it.
  • Run the tool.
  • Copy and paste the following into the edit box:

    C:\WINDOWS\698955524
  • Press Create button and post the content of the Result.txt.

    Important: Restart the computer.

Next, download Combofix from either of the links below, and save it to your desktop. For information regarding this download, please visit this webpage: how-to-use-combofix

Link 1
Link 2

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

1. Close any open browsers.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

How to Temporarily Disable your Anti-virusl

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please copy the "C:\ComboFix.txt" into your reply.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

In your reply, please copy in DummyCreator report and the ComboFix report. Let me know about that item the aswMBR found.

I had to run the aswMBR scan multiple times because I only had about one second to write down the name of the SUSPICIOUS file. But I'm pretty sure this was it:

Hi-

Good timing - I had just edited my post to add in the DummyCreator. Note that several non-system files were infected that ComboFix could not find a clean copy to replace with. They will have to be re-installed or the software program/system that they are part of will have to be re-installed. I'll send a list soon.

In the meantime - please run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM)
  • Click on the Update tab and click the Check for Updates button.
  • When the update is finished, click on the Scanner tab.
  • Select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy & Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Hi-

These are the files that ComboFix deleted and the software they belong to;

c:\program files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\AppleMobileDeviceService.exe -- Apple
c:\program files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe -------------------------------------- Apple's Bonjour
c:\windows\system32\CTsvcCDA.exe ------------------------------------------------ Creative Service for CDROM Access
c:\program files\NavNT\defwatch.exe ------------------------------------------------ Symantec Antivirus
c:\program files\Intel\Intel Application Accelerator\iaantmon.exe ---------------- Intel
c:\windows\system32\lxeecoms.exe ------------------------------------------------- Lexmark printers
c:\program files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7DEBUG\MDM.EXE --------- debug manager
c:\program files\Dell Support Center\bin\sprtsvc.exe ------------------------------ Dell Support Center
c:\program files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe ------------------------ Viewpoint (should be removed)
c:\windows\system32\MsPMSPSv.exe ------------------------------------------------- Windows media player

Probably, the easiest way to get them back is to restore them individually from a backup created prior to the infection.

See, I thought I was going crazy when I suddenly saw the DummyCreator. I actually ran the ComboFix before I saw the DummyCreator; I hope that's not a huge deal.

Here is the MBAM report. It said "Certain items could not be removed."

Hi-

Need to check on a couple of files.

First, before we start, please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Please click this link-->Jotti
When the Jotti page has finished loading, click Jotti's Browse button and navigate to the following files in turn and click the Submit file button within Jotti.

c:\windows\system32\drivers\29110434.sys
c:\windows\system32\c_74232.nl_

If Jotti reports that the file has been scanned before and gives you those results, click on the Scan Again button.
To scan the next file, click on the Next File button.
Please post back the results of the scan in your next post. You can just post the links to the reports.
If Jotti is busy, try the same at Virustotal

Copy the result links into your next reply. How is the computer running?

This is the scan result for c:\windows\system32\c_74232.nl_

http://virusscan.jotti.org/en/scanresult/d4c94a30c2b26f8b1c60a81846abf93f96f6dbb6

I could not find c:\windows\system32\drivers\29110434.sys I tried to navigate to look for it and also directly copied and pasted that directory, but nothing came up.

The computer is running a lot better. There are no more google redirects.

Hi-

As you could see the one file (c_74232.nl_) is infected and needs to be submitted to the ComboFix folks. Since the other file doesn't exist, we don't have to worry about it.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic416471.html
Collect::
c:\windows\system32\c_74232.nl_

Save this as CFScript.txt

Posted Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

**Note**

When CF finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture files to submit for analysis.
  • Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK on the message box.

Next, I'd like for you to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control key and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
  • ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip the next two steps)
  • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image

Finally, do a new OTL scan.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • In the Extra Registry Box, check None
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • A report will open, copy and paste it into your reply:
  • OTL.txt <-- Will be the opened report

Please copy in the ComboFix log, the ESET OnlineScan report, and the OTL report into your reply.
