Two recent problems that may or may not be related:

1. Get redirected from target sites when selecting them in/after a Google search - seems it does it all the time unless I select a choice from+ a later page; and then cannot go back using the back arrow.

2. Norton is indicating that it is constantly detecting and removing a high threat, a Trojan (Trojan.Tracur!gen1ietutil32.exe).

I have run Norton scans multiple times and it indicates that all threats have been removed. I have rebooted, run file clean up multiple times (cleaned everything up), and then jumped onto Google first thing - and still have the redirect problem.

My Windows Firewall is Off - but I think that is because of the Norton Security Suite.

I tried to run Micro Trend HiJackThis, but it gets interrupted partially through the scan and stops with the following meassge: "For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hilacked domains are in this file, HiJackThis may NOT be able to fix this. If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this , click Start, Run, and type: notepad C:\Windows\System 32\drives\etc\hosts and press Enter. But after I click Okay, it looks as though it continues its scan, but then bring up an empty notepad file and does not do anything after this.

My Operating System is Vista and the Norton Security Suite is Engine\4.3.05

Thanks a lot for whatever help you can offer, I appreciate it.

Keep safe if you are on the East Coast ... we are in our basement waiting for a tornado warning to pass. Thanks again.

Orange Blossom,

Thank you for your help and guidance. I was not sure if I should have just gone ahead and started to follow the steps (because I was not certain that was malware or a virus). Thanks for stepping up to the plate.

Bleeping Computer Malware Team,

Here are the 3 logs suggested - the DDS (pasted below), the Attach (zip file attached), and the GMER (file attached).

Malware Removal Team,

Thank you in advance for taking a look at the problem I am having and for whatever help you can offer. It looks like this Google redirect problem is affecting quite a few people, and as such, maybe there are only a handful of viruses and/or malwares that are responsible for these problems. But if this is not the case, I just want to pass on a few observations I have noticed regarding this 'redirect' issue.

1. Not being a computer expert, perhaps this is obvious, but if I run my computer in the 'Safe Mode with Networking', I do not get redirected when selecting/choosing one of the alternatives offered by Google.

2. When in Normal run mode (non-safe mode), if I run Clean Files on Norton Security Suite, close it, then go onto the internet via Internet Explorer, and select Google before my MSN home page opens up, then I am able to able to type in a search, and select one of the offerings and Google directs me there (instead of being redirected).

3. Then, if after #2 above, if I go back to MSN and then back to Google, when I run the same search and select the same alternative, I get re-directed.

4. If I then go to Norton, run clean files (normally 180 to 210 files being cleaned), and a quick scan (usually 6 or 16 cookies being cleaned), close and then re-open IE and quickly go to Google, I can select and go to one of the alternatives offered from a search on Google without being re-directed. But if I go back to Google and perform the same search and select the same alternative, I will get re-directed.

I do not know what any of the above means, just observations.

Thanks again,
Tom

Quick question for those of you whom are experienced with the apprent malware i now have on my computer -
is this only affecting my computer when i select the options that come up when i do a search on google, or am i at risk with things beyond google?

- for example, should i not enter any financial sites that expose my financial institutions, user names, and passwords?

- should i not pay bills online?

- should i not buy anything online - thru amazon, or other vendor?

- should i move my financial info off my hard drive?

thanks for you thoughts,
TomUSA

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.
  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Gringo,

Yes, I still need help with all of this. I have been working doubles over the last week and did not realize anyone had responded. Unfortunately at work, we are not allowed to access our personal e-mail accounts, and quite honestly, I have been too tired to check e-mails and this site while working the doubles.

So thank you. I will read through the e-mails now and try to respond tonight. And for those I cannot respond to tonight, if any, I will try to give you a better idea of when I expect to be able to do whatever you request.

Thanks,
Tom

Gringo,

1. Thank you.

2. While trying Google just a few minutes ago, I was NOT re-directed when selecting choices/websites from searches that previously I was re-directed. I tried five different searches / sites, that when I asked for your team's help, I was re-directed each and every time I selected them. So it seems the problem I had with the re-directs, has been eliminated (THANK YOU!).

3. I will wait to hear from you regarding - If you, upon helping me and reviewing my log files, you see any other problems with my computer that I should take care of. Although I was a little bit annoyed with the Google re-direct issue, my bigger concern was using this same computer for financial transactions (mostly bank account verifications and paying bills on-line). I was also concerned that the malware/virus behind the issues, could be entering and harming the system or financial files.

4. I turned my Norton Security Suite (firewall, anti-spyware, virus protection) back on.

5. Please find below the log report from Combofix:

Gringo,

For whatever reason, I can run the HiJacks software, but I cannot save a log file. Seems as if saving a log file should be easy to write, but it has not been yet, I will you let you know if I can save and post.

Thanks,
Tom
