I seem to have gotten a nasty malware infection that disables all of my security software, thereby preventing any attempts to remove it.

I am running Windows XP SP3 on a QuadCore Intel Q6600 with 4Gb of RAM.

I originally had the Internet Security 2012 bug but was able to remove it manually using suggestions from this forum. No more popups or fake infection messages. But when I tried to scan my system using SuperAntiSpyware and MalwareBytes they would start up and then die before completion. There seems to be a process which detects that they are running and kills them. Trying to run it a second time yields a message saying "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." I am able to reactivate the program using inherit.exe, but this does not help it run to conclusion.

I tried various suggestions I found such as changing the .exe extension to .com or.scr to no avail. Neither does renaming the executable to a fake name or even changing the name of the install file. These seem to have worked on previous versions of this malware, but no more.

Windows Task Manager works fine and shows one suspicious process named 2291299609:3867831671.exe. I cannot kill this process. I found a few entries in the registry with the same name but was reluctant to delete them.

My AVG software has been disabled and I cannot get it restarted.

The strange thing is that other than the security software, most general purpose software is working normally, such as Word, Excel, Quicken, Notepad, etc. and there is no noticeable slowdown.

There are a few other glitches. For example, running Adobe Acrobat causes an error message that says "A serious error has been detected and Adobe Acrobat 8 Standard cannot continue. Please reinstall the application and try again." When I click on OK the pdf document is then closed.

Per the bleepingcomputer guidelines I downloaded and ran dds and gmer. The dds log is shown below. Unfortunately, gmer is one of the programs that is killed by the malware in the middle of the scan, so I cannot include it. (It does run if I do not uncheck the IAT/EAT option box.)

I want to thank you in advance for your assistance.

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

  • Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger may ask you to reboot the machine, if it does - click OK
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Download DDS:

  • Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

Hello Gringo and thank you so much for taking the time to help me.

You should know that after not hearing a response to my post for several days I did a bit more research and made a little progress following some suggestions that were made for others with similar infections. Specifically, I was able to delete the previously unkillable task C:\WINDOWS\2291299609:3867831671.exe.

After that I was able to run SAS and MalwareBytes in Safe mode. There deleted a bunch of infections, although when I rebooted in normal mode some of them came back.

That said, I am now following your instructions.

Hello Peter

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

Gringo,

Below is the ComboFix log.

- The Google redirect problem is fixed.
- I still get the message "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." when running MalwareBytes and trying to access .cbr and .cbz files.
- Still have the problem with Acrobat 8.0 crashing and producing the message "A serious error has been detected and Adobe Acrobat 8 Standard cannot continue. Please reinstall the application and try again."
- I cannot run SAS directly, but can run it using SASSAFERUN.COM (I ran it and got 3 tracking cookies)
- I have also lost a good chunk of my Start menu items
- Finally, I have lost access to my Windows 7 computer's C: drive via the drive mapping. This has been a problem ever since I first got the malware. In fact, neither computer can access the other's C: drive.

Peter

Greetings

Good That cleaned up some bad guys but I see some other stuff that we need to go after, so I want you to run this custom script for me.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

ClearJavaCache::

File::
c:\windows\oxacecisuwaq.dll

Firefox::
FF - ProfilePath - c:\documents and settings\WINDOWS XP\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\1rgyq1tl.default\
FF - prefs.js: browser.startup.homepage - file:///C:/0-Local%20Files/Body2.htm
FF - prefs.js: network.proxy.http - 127.0.0.1
FF - prefs.js: network.proxy.http_port - 50370

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Posted Image
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • report from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now after running the script?

Thanks, Gringo.

Below is the latest ComboFix log.

Unfortunately, the Acrobat error is still present.
I still can't access .CBR and .CBZ files.
I still can't run MalwareBytes.
I can't turn AVG back on (I have not rebooted yet).
Finally there is now a very suspicious new process running. It has a long name: 2841ee0a-22e7-43d9-af78-27467a0685b9.com

So we have not made a lot of progress.

By the way, I have been hesitant to use this computer fpr any sensitive tasks that migh involve entering passwords, for fear of a key logger. Do you think my caution is justified?

- Peter

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

File::
c:\windows\system32\c_75046.nl_

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Posted Image
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • report from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now after running the script?

ComboFix log is below.

Unfortunately, this did not seem to accomplish much.
I still have the Acrobat error, I still don't have access to .cbr and .cbz files, I still have the suspicious task with the long name and I still can't run MalwareBytes.

Gringo,

I need to run to the hospital right now to visit my sick mother-in-law, so I won't be responding any more tonight. Thanks for all your help so far. I will be back tomorrow morning.

For x86 bit systems please download GrantPerms.zip and save it to your desktop.
For x64 bit systems please download GrantPerms64.zip and save it to your desktop.
Unzip the file and depending on the system run GrantPerms.exe or GrantPerms64.exe
Copy and paste the following in the edit box:

c:\1-Personal\Windows Software\Process Explorer 12.04.exe
c:\1-Personal\Windows Software\System maintenance tools\HijackThis.exe
c:\1-Personal\Windows Software\XP 2012 virus tools\procexp.com
c:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe
c:\Program Files\Autoruns\autoruns.exe
c:\Program Files\AVG\AVG10\avgcsrvx.exe
c:\Program Files\AVG\AVG10\avgmfapx.exe
c:\\Program Files\AVG\AVG10\Identity Protection\Agent\Bin\AVGIDSAgent.exe
c:\Program Files\Comical\Comical.exe
c:\Program Files\Emsisoft HiJackFree\a2hijackfree.exe
c:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
c:\Qoobox\BackEnv

Click Unlock. When it is done click "OK".
Click List Permissions and post the result (Perms.txt) that pops up. A copy of Perms.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Gringo, I'm back.

I ran the GrantPerms program and am showing the report below.

Most of the permission problems seem to have been fixed. However, I couldn't restart AVG, so I rebooted the computer, which didn't help. Also, I am still having the problem of Adobe Acrobat crashing as soon as I open a pdf file. If necessary, I can reinstall both of these.

I ran MalwareBytes and it showed no infections.
