Posted 26 August 2011 - 07:43 PM

On August 17th I was attacked with a fake virus scanning program calling itself "Security Protection." It immediately disabled my ability to open or run any programs, including Malwarebytes. I booted into safe mode and ran mbam from there, removed it and another worm, the name of which I don't recall. Upon restarting, I started getting UAC popups telling me that EIGHT different .exe files needed permission to run. All of them start with "win" and then have a string of 10 numbers. So far, every time I start up, the numbers have been different. Google doesn't recognize any of them. I DO NOT allow any of these to run since I have no idea what they are. On Monday or so I suddenly started getting "ghost" boxes...popups that don't show up on my taskbar, and can only be glimpsed for a few seconds if you quickly switch to the desktop. The most recent one just said "thanks." Google has started redirecting as well, just today. At random intervals I also get boxes asking me if I am sure I want to leave the page, even when I am not doing anything at all of the sort.
I updated and ran mbam tonight and removed 15 more infected items (WHAT), and then ran CCleaner and fixed 60 or so problems. The first time I ran CCleaner (after destroying the security protection virus) there were 498 problems to be fixed.
Things seem to be unraveling rather quickly! Any help would be appreciated! I know it's been a while since the initial attack, and I really had been meaning to do this last weekend, but I didn't get around to it. Here are my logs. I have 64-bit vista, so only DDS logs.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/416200 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

I do still need help! A new problem has arisen as well: A temp (.tmp) file will stop working a few hours or sooner after startup. I'll be on the Internet and a popup will appear telling me that a .tmp file has stopped working (I can't remember/didn't write down the name of the file). It doesn't seem to affect anything after it stops, though. Anyway, here are my new DDS logs:

Hello and welcome. Please follow these guidelines while we work on your PC:
  • Malware removal is a sometimes lengthy and tedious process. Please stick with the thread until I’ve given you the “All clear.” Absence of symptoms does not mean your machine is clean!
  • Please do not run any scans or install/uninstall any applications without being directed to do so.
  • Please note that the forum is very busy and if I don't hear from you within five days this thread will be closed.
Posted Image P2P - I see you have P2P software (uTorrent) installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to malware infections. Please see this post for more information. I recommend that you uninstall these now. You can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs. If you choose to keep these applications, please do not use them until our fixes at BC are complete.

Posted Image Download Combofix from either of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------
IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • If you have trouble, stop and post back. Do not try to repeatedly run comboFix!
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following in your next post:
  • ComboFix log

I have uninstalled uTorrent, since I hadn't been using it recently anyway. I got what I wanted from it, and probably those viruses too.
I ran combofix and it rebooted my computer and so far the .exe popups have not appeared, but I don't want to count my chickens! Here is my combofix log:

Ah, also, after the reboot, I seem to have Internet Explorer re-installed...there's an icon called "The Internet" with the IE "e" logo on my desktop now. Well I guess it was never completely uninstalled anyway but after combofix the shortcut is back and it was reset to my default browser. I switched back to firefox, though.

idamaynot:

Combofix restores several things, including the default browser settings, back to their defaults. You can just delete that icon. Please do this next:

Posted Image Open Notepad Go to Start> All Programs> Accessories> Notepad ( this will only work with Notepad ) and copy all the text inside the Codebox by highlighting it all and pressing CTRL C on your keyboard, then paste it into Notepad, make sure there is no space before and above DirLook::

DirLook::
c:\users\Ida\{0035d0bc-aa95-447b-b7a9-add9384c48f9}
DDS::
uInternet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:63515
Firefox::
FF - ProfilePath - c:\users\Ida\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\40qu3891.default\
FF - prefs.js: network.proxy.http - 127.0.0.1
FF - prefs.js: network.proxy.http_port - 63515
FF - prefs.js: network.proxy.type - 4

Save this as CFScript to your desktop.

Then disable your security programs and drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply.

  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Uncheck any entries from C:\System Volume Information or C:\Qoobox
  • Make sure that everything else is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)

How is your computer running now? Please do this next:

Posted Image Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a program, and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Click (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE or Java™ 6) in the name and select "uninstall".
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Go to this page to download the latest version
  • Run the insatller you just downloaded
Posted Image Please go to here to run an online scan with ESET.
    • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
    • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
    • Click Start
    • When asked, allow the activex control to install
    • Click Start
    • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked, and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
    • Click on Advanced Settings and ensure these options are ticked:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • If any threats were found, click the 'List of found threats' , then click Export to text file....
  • Save it to your desktop, then please copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.
Please include the following in your next post:
  • How is the computer running now?
  • ESET log

The computer seems to be working very well. No unknown .exes popping up, Google is no longer redirecting, and it was a lot faster to boot up too! It seems like any time I've had a big problem with malware, it's always my dang java being outdated. But anyway I uninstalled it and downloaded the newest update. However, I can't run the ESET test because it's unable to download the database. It wants to know if the proxy is configured? I left the "custom proxy settings" box unchecked the first time I tried, and then checked it the second time. Neither worked. I can't configure the custom settings myself because I don't know my proxy address or port. What should I do next?

Sounds like we are all set! All I have left for you is another update and some very important cleanup:

Posted Image Your Adobe reader needs to be updated. Please visit Adobe's site and grab the newest version. Be sure to watch for and uncheck any boxes offering to install other software.

Posted Image Uninstall ComboFix
  • Press the Windows key + R on your keyboard or click Start -> Run. Copy and past the following text into the run box that opens and press OK:
    Combofix /Uninstall
Posted Image

Posted Image Delete the following tools along with any other logs you saved from our work:
  • DDS
Posted Image Download TFC to your desktop
  • Close any open windows.
  • Double click the TFC icon to run the program
  • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
  • Click the Start button to begin the process.
  • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
  • The program should not take long to finish it's job
  • Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
  • if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean
Posted Image Finally, I'd like to make a couple of suggestions to help you stay clean in the future:
  • Restart any anti-malware programs that we disabled while we were cleaning your machine.
  • Keep your antivirus application and MBAM current and updated. Scan with them at least weekly.
  • Avoid using P2P programs. Refer back to my earlier post for more information.
  • Please read this post for some helpful information.
Please post once more so I know you are all set and I can mark this thread resolved. Good luck and stay safe!
