Would somebody please tell me what programs my computer needs to keep running right. I want to shut all programs down that the computer doesn't need so that I can play a game. Right now, If I install a game and try to play it my computer will re-boot itself after a few minutes. I need to see if there's a program that's making it re-boot.

See the tutorial regarding startup programs here:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/

Here you will find a good ap to control startup programs.
Be very careful that you do not disable your anti-virus program or firewall if you are going to be on the internet.

I prefer StartupCPL by Mike Lin for ordinary startup scrubbing. It's available for free here: http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

Another more advanced program for this (free also) is Autoruns by SysInternals - it's available here: http://www.sysinternals.com/utilities/autoruns.html

Finally, there's a new program out by Merjin (the author of HiJackThis) and it looks very promising (but I haven't used it much). Once again, it's free and available here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/Merijn/startuplist.zip

Picture of it here on the main page:

I figgered that this needed an extra post - rather than a long one - because of the problem that you've related.

A spontaneous reboot of your system probably isn't caused by a startup entry. Most likely it's caused by a conflict within the computer.

Could you tell us a bit about the system that you're using? It's make, model, and specifications (and if it's home-built or a major manufacturer).

Also, what games does this happen with? when did it start happening? What had you done to the system just before it started happening?
