Hi, I'm having an issue with an error code called: 0x80072EFE . My troubles come from a months old issue which only recently I've had some leeway figuring out...

So here's the issue in detail:

About six months ago, my computer started having issues involving windows update and automatic updates. Every time I tried to start windows update it would open windows explorer and fail to reach the Microsoft website. At first I thought it could have been something like a browser hijacker in IE preventing my computer from reaching their server so instead I tried my other browsers including Firefox and Google Chrome... No dice.

When it came to automatic updates, I opened AU and saw that everything was grayed out so that I could not change anything.

From here I realized there was something truly wrong... So here is where I first encountered the error code 0x80072EFE.

I have Microsoft Security Essentials installed on my computer and every time I tried to update the virus database, it would start and then fail resulting with that error code. I've used malwarebytes and hijackthis of which I can still update, and they give me no traces of viruses or malware.

Now for the slightly good news.. earlier today I read a post on this forum: Click . Apparently someone had a similar but slightly different error issue. I read along and decided to try user .X.'s idea to install "dial a fix" for repairing windows update. After which I can now finally access Microsoft's website. But, now when I try to go through the install process for their updates, it comes up with this message:
Posted Image

I tried searching through Microsoft, and I found that the error code means that "the connection is terminated." Well, obviously... Besides that, I am stuck.. This code is nearly unheard of on most forums and yet it seems to be the source or part of the source of my issue.

I appreciate any help and am more than willing to provide any more information to help fix this..

Thanks.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941 - 0x80072EF -2147012866 ERROR_INTERNET_CONNECTION_ABORTED.

Something is preventing your connection from actually happening. So please run the following:

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Minidump Files
Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

Please follow the instructions in ==>Malware Removal and Log Section Preparation Guide<==.

Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it ==>HERE<== Please include the link to this topic in your new topic and a description of your computer issues and what you have done to resolve them.

If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.

Once you have created the new topic, please reply back here with a link to the new topic.

Most importantly please be patient till you get a reply to your topic.
