No start up button or anything on windows 7

I am very very new to windows 7 and for some reason I can't find the start up button or anything on my screen. I've googled the problem but pressing ctrl alt del causes the screen to go black instead. I can pretty much only right click on the empty space. Could someone please help me with this problem?
