Hello - thank you in advance for taking the time to help people in positions such as this! I'm a novice with systems information, but have followed all the steps in your 'read this first' guide.

I have read a bit online about people having similar problems to me, where clicking on a result of a Google search, diverts me to various sales or alternative search / compiled web listings pages. If I click the back button and try the search result link a second time, I'm taken to the correct page. The only thing I have done to try and counter this (apart from all the steps advised in your pre-reading), was to disable the add-on XULRunner 1.9.1 in Firefox, having read that that did the trick for one blogger. A five minute search trial was redirect free, but I realised that if the cause had been malware infecting that add-on, all I had done was disable the add-on, not remove the malware. So I re-enabled it.

A related problem that seems not to be a problem any more, was Google image searches only showing the first page (or two, I can't be sure noe) of thumbnails. If I clicked on 'advanced' and searched again with the same term, the full set of search result thumbnails would show. I can't recall what I did to fix that problem. I may have followed some simple Mozilla help instructions...but it seems okay now. In fact, I think this rediverting started after the images problem was solved.

ETA: I have had AVG pick up a couple of threats recently, coinciding with a redirect. And I ran a full system scan when I first noticed the divert start happening, and as I recall (I wasn't keeping a record of actions at that point) one trojan was identified and removed.

My PC is not networked, it has two "users", myself and my boyfriend. We are careful users and fairly wary online. Before AVG I used McAfee (which I uninstalled before installing AVG). My hard drive is partitioned. Sorry if I'm telling you useless things. If you respond and need to ask me things, laymans terms will help me - I'm not overly familiar with all the terminology behind PCs, and benefit from clear instructions in these matters!

I've zipped the 'Attach' file as per the instructions, though it was only 8KB without zipping ?! Below is my DDS log, and attached are both 'Attach' and 'Ark.txt'.

Thank you again.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/415672 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

I will start work on getting the new logs ready to post. One thing that seems to have become apparent is that it doesn't appear (so far) that the second user on my PC, is suffering from the Google redirect. When I described the problem to him, he had never encountered it, and when we browsed on his 'side' of the PC last night, we didn't experience the redirect once. I, however, have continued to experience it since my original post. I don't know whether that will help in locating the whereabouts of the malware. Many thanks, and I will get all the new logs up as soon as I can.

The GMER log is being generated now, but in answer to the other question - I do have the recovery media available; a DVD 'System recovery media' for Windows Vista, supplied with the laptop when new. I guess a system restore is a last resort? But all documents files are backed up, as stated previously.

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.
  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Hello Gringo,

thank you for this :-)

I have run combofix, after disabling my anti-virus protection. There were no problems running it, other than my AVG kicked in again before combofix had finished scanning (I had selected the 15 minute disable option as advised in the instructions). But then AVG detected a threat from combofix, I just selected 'allow', and the scan and log production continued. I hope that didn't cause any harm? The other possible interruption to the scan was my screensaver kicking in toward the end. I had forgotten that. But I had closed all other dialogue boxes and applications before running combofox.

I have just tried a sample browse, and with just three Google searches and six clicks on the results... no redirects. I chose subjects which I knew would be likely to redirect me - things like "best washing machines", "car insurance", "buying a house", because searches like that have never failed in the last few weeks to divert me to other search or comparison type sites. I will try again through the evening, but wanted to get the log to you, and let you know that a very brief initial browse seems promising...

Full combofix log below,

sincerely.

Greetings sadsack85

Good That cleaned up some bad guys but I see some other stuff that we need to go after, so I want you to run this custom script for me.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

ClearJavaCache::

Folder::
c:\users\Anna\AppData\Roaming\Giorku
c:\users\Anna\AppData\Roaming\Onuxq

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Posted Image
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • report from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now after running the script?

Hello Gringo - all done, here's the new Combofix log. It took over 1hr 30mins to run and produce the log - is that normal?? No error messages or problems though; although again AGV detected a threat with combofix, but during the log production stage this time. So I selected 'allow', and everything seemed to carry on okay...

These logs are looking alot better. But we still have some work to do.

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file. It will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps..

uninstall some programs

1. click on start
2. then go to settings
3. after that you need control panel
4. look for the icon add/remove programs
click on the following programs

Adobe Reader 8.1.0
Advertising Center
ALOT Toolbar
Ask Toolbar

and click on remove

Update Adobe Reader

Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version.

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

If you don't like Adobe Reader (53 MB), you can download Foxit PDF Reader(7 MB) from here. It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.

Note: When installing FoxitReader, be carefull not to install anything to do with AskBar.
[/list]
Your Java is out of date.

It can be updated by the Java control panel

  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.
Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware :

    • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Hello,

this has been a miserable couple of hours. I haven't completed everything outlined in your last mail, due to ongoing problems. Details below:

Uninstall
Adobe Reader 8.1.0 - DONE
Advertising Center - Does not show in the list of programmes available to uninstall
ALOT Toolbar - DONE
Ask Toolbar - Does not show in the list of programmes available to uninstall

Update Adobe Reader / Foxit
I chose Foxit Reader, which froze during installation, so I had to force the set-up to close using the task manager. As a result, it’s evidently half installed, so not showing for ‘uninstall’. When I tried to run the set-up .exe a second time, at the point of asking it to ‘install’, I got a dialogue box telling me to close Foxit Reader before continuing. But it wasn’t evidently open anywhere. How do I get rid of all trace of that so I can start again? I may srick to Adobe – I’ve never had any problems with an install of that before.

Your Java is out of date.
DONE - updates made without any apparent problems

Clear your Java Cache
DONE - without any apparent problems

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):
This failed to complete. I got a dialogue box saying "TFC has stopped working - A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will stop working correctly. Windows will close the programme and notify you if a solution is available".

I waited about 30 minutes and the desktop didn't come back (except for the wallpaper), so I ctrl/alt/del and logged off and on again. Everything was closed and saved before I started running TFC.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
Not yet attempted

Download HijackThis
Not yet attempted

Do you know what the two desktop.ini icons are which have appeared on my desktop? From the properties they appear very old, but have just appeared...

I have to get some sleep now - I'm concerned, though, about the half-installed Foxit and the incomplete run of TFC.

Thank you for your help so far - it had appeared to be going well until these problems!

restart the computer and see if it still gives you problems - if it does move to the next part and let me know when you post the reports

Hello - I think you mean for me to try again with the Foxit install, and with the TFC run? And to continue with the other stages even if both fail again. I will give both another try, and I'll be patient with them...

All done, but there is no log from HijackThis. I have kept open the window where the results of the scan are shown, and though the scan launched notepad, it didn't put anything in there (there was a message about a destination folder not being found, and it asked whether I wanted to create it. I selected yes). The scan results window suggests using the 'Analyse this' button and sending the log to someone knowledgeable, but I haven't done that, because it's expressly what your instructions say not to do. How can I get you a log from the results of that scan?

Below is the MBAM log - looking good?

This time Foxit installed successfully, in seconds, and the TFC ran smoothly, also in seconds. I don't know what was wrong last night!!

Problems:
1. How do I uninstall Ask Toolbar and Advertising Center if I can't see them in the programmes available to uninstall?
2. I still don't know what the two new 'Desktop.ini' shortcuts on my desktop are
