I was recently taken over by a worm/virus/bug/trojan/pain in the @#*@ and my computer was completely disabled. I now am up and running smoothing except one thing. I need IE6 to run MS Money. My computer has IE5.5. I am not able to complete the update for some reason. I get 2 error messages that run me in a circle

-Setup was unable to install all the components. Please close all applications and try to reinstall setup again.

Which leads me to this

-A previous installation has pending work requiring a reboot. You need to restart you computer to complete that installations before running IE setup. Setup will now close.

I have rebooted and re ran the installation a million times and I keep getting the same thing over and over and over. I even was going to completely uninstall IE but.... it isn't in my add/remove programs list.

HELP!!!! I want to get to my finances in MS Money.

Since I'm having the same problem and HJT proved to be no help, I checked out the link also. It's for Windows 2000-based OS's which I believe ME is but I didn't have "Pending File Rename Operations" in my Regedit folder. I hope QueenJustice posts back that it worked. Is there anything else that can be done?
Maybe it's a Windows Update issue, critical or otherwise for WinME?
Our situations are exactly the same and since we are both running ME, I have to wonder if we might be missing something like that.
Perhaps someone could research this for us. I got nowhere.
Thanks for posting QueenJustice, let us know if it worked for you.
I'll watch this thread to see if anyone discovers something else.

Unfortunately that did not work. If you have any other suggestions they would be greatly appreciated. If not...thanks so much for the help that you have given me.

short of completely zapping my computer to the begining I have tried everything and I still can't get the 6.0 install to finish. The microsoft website doesn't really seem to be a lot of help either. I am at a dead end with this one.

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Create a folder named "Old uninstall". on your c:\ drive

Now go to the folder c:\program files\internet explorer\Uninstall Information

Click on edit then select all. Then click on edit and then cut.

Now open the c:\old uninstal folder you just made and paste those cut files into it.

Now try upgrading IE
