Hello there. Several months back I reinstalled Windows XP onto a family laptop with an Athlon X2 dual core processor and 2GB of RAM. While I was at it I also introduced Kaspersky Internet Security. As I don't use the machine in question as my primary device, I did not have to suffer through months of sluggish performance like my family members did. I finally got a little smarter about it and tinkered with the settings for Kaspersky. After disabling a few features, and setting some scanner settings from "regular" to "low," speed is finally somewhere near acceptable. The main question I have is, have I lowered the security to an unacceptable level?

(Instructor) You put a Linux machine within a Windows machine within a Mac? That's great! Now where is that paper on BitTorrents vulnerabilities that was due last week?

Please perform the following, so that we can get the exact specs of your computer. This will better assist us in helping you more.

Publish a Snapshot using Speccy

The below is for those who cannot get online

Please take caution when attaching a text file to your post if you cannot copy/paste the link to your post, you will need to edit it to make sure that your Windows Key is not present.

Sorry for taking so stinking long to get this up, so easy for everything else to just take over! Below is the text output of Speccy minus the external IP address and serial number. I couldn't get it to publish online for some reason. Let me know if I should post it in a different manner.

I would recommend upgrading to faster DDR2 RAM, but your computer as is is fine for Windows XP. I see nothing that would slow it down.

I would agree with that, and I think once I pulled back the settings on Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 we got closer to where we want to be performance-wise. However, I wanted to make sure that we were still well protected without the features that I disabled.

The main question I have is, have I lowered the security to an unacceptable level?

Usually its best to install using the default settings to start, then monitor system performance with those settings. Sometimes you have to experiement and adjust those settings when encountering performance issues. What works for one system may not work for another.

Further, most security suites include a lot of unnecessary bell and whistles which can consume resources. These features are not always essential to security so tweaking them is the best place to start. If your scans begin to show an increase in detected threats, then you may have to raise your security settings a bit more.

As with any anti-virus or security tool you should always read the user manuals and any documentation provided by the vendor. Kaspersky Internet Security Documentation/User Guides

Thanks for the feedback, I'll look into that.
