Posted 15 August 2011 - 09:39 AM

Whenever I use Google, the search links are redirected to another search engine. I have not been able to locate the malware using freeware I have installed (ThreatFire, avast!, Malwarebytes, Kingsoft) to remove it. Below is the dds log I ran today. I am running a 64-bit Windows system so could not run the GMER software for that log.

I really appreciate any help! Thank you!

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resouce! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/414508 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

I still have the problem in its same format:

Whenever I use Google, the search links are redirected to another search engine. I have not been able to locate the malware using freeware I have installed (ThreatFire, avast!, Malwarebytes, Kingsoft) to remove it. Below is the dds log I ran today. I am running a 64-bit Windows system so could not run the GMER software for that log.

I really appreciate any help! Thank you!

Hi hunchbackhunter, and welcome to Bleeping Computer.

Firstly,
You seem to have multiple security programs of the same type installed and running in resident mode... It's not recommended to run more than one security program of the same type (eg. antivirus, firewall, anti-spyware) in resident mode because they can conflict with each other.
I strongly recommend you uninstall (or at least disable) some security products, so that only one antivirus, one firewall and one anti-spyware program provides a real-time protection (please note that some products offer multiple protection - eg. both antivirus and firewall)...

Secondly,
  • Please launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, click the Update tab, and then Check for Updates.
  • Then choose the Scanner tab and select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Thirdly,
Download OTL.exe by OldTimer to your Desktop.

  • Close all windows and double click OTL.exe.
  • In the "Custom Scans/Fixes" window (under the light green bar) paste the following in bold:

    netsvcs
    drivers32
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.*
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    CREATERESTOREPOINT
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update\Results\Install|LastSuccessTime /rs

  • Click Run Scan and let the program run uninterrupted.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two Notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL. Post both logs in this thread.
  • You may need to use two posts to get it all.

Hi again hunchbackhunter!!.. :)

I really appreciate your help in this.

You're welcome!.. :)

Please do the following:

Firstly,
I do still see multiple protection programs installed and running in resident mode (unless the OTL scan was run prior to uninstalling some of these programs):
- Avast! 5.0
- McAfee
- PCTools' ThreatFire

When it comes to the last one - PCTools' ThreatFire - as far as I can see, it can run with other antivirus products, so if you're satisfied with that program and you do not experience any serious system slowdown, you can leave that product installed and running... Otherwise, please uninstall it...
When it comes to McAfee - I'm really not sure if it's up-to-date (with virus databases updated), as it's a paid product, and you usually have to renew a subscription every single year... If this program is outdated, I recommend you remove it...
Avast! antivirus Free is a good product, but if you decide to keep McAfee installed and running, I suggest uninstalling Avast!, so that there are no conflicts between antiviruses...

Secondly, please run the script with OTL.exe; two notes first:
- OTL.exe program runs from an odd location (C:\Users\Natalie\Downloads\OTL(2).exe), I suggest moving it to your Desktop (before running the fix) for an easier access...
- with the script below, I included the ComboFix program and its folder in the removal - ComboFix is a very powerful tool and should not really be used without an experienced Helper's help...

Please run OTL.exe.
  • Copy the commands with file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

Sure. Thanks for keeping me honest. I deleted McAfee as you suggested since I did not have the updated software and am running ThreatFire and Avast.

First the OTL log:

Hi again hunchbackhunter!!.. :)

Please tell me if the browser redirect problem persists... It should be ok now, as the malicious Firefox Add-on was removed with the OTL script...

Please also update outdated programs (with security vulnerabilities) on your machine:

- Adobe Acrobat Reader:

You're using an old version of Adobe Acrobat Reader, this can leave your PC open to vulnerabilities, you can update it here (uninstall version 9.1.2 first):
Adobe Reader X

Note: I suggest you uncheck an optional, third-party download (eg. McAfee Security Scan Plus).

After successfully installing Adobe Reader X, see this article on how to make this program more secure: Adobe Reader X secures itself by playing in the sandbox.

- Java

Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Programs and Features, highlight a program to see the available option on the toolbar for it. Choose Uninstall for:
Java™ 6 Update 16 (64-bit)
Java™ 6 Update 23

Then,
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 7.
  • Scroll down to where it says Java Platform, Standard Edition / "Java SE 7".
  • Click the Download button under "JRE".
  • In the Window that opens, check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click on the link: jre-7-windows-i586.exe to download an offline installer for Windows x86. Save the file to your Desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Then from your Desktop double-click on the file that you've downloaded to install the newest version.

If you wish to use Java on a 64bit browser as well, you can also download and install a version for a Windows x64 system...

- Adobe Flash Player:

To make sure you have the latest version of Adobe Flash Player installed:
1. To uninstall an older version, download this file to your Desktop: uninstall_flash_player.exe
2. Quit ALL running applications, including all Internet Explorer or other browser windows, and messenger applications (like AOL Instant Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger.
3. Double-click on the file you've downloaded to uninstall Flash.
4. If uninstalled successfully, go to this site: Install Adobe Flash Player, and choose Agree and install now. This will install the newest version of Flash for your browser (note: Flash plugins for IE and Firefox must be installed separately).
Note: I recommend you uncheck an optional install (Free McAfee Security Scan or Free Google Toolbar).

- Mozilla Firefox (3.6.18) - unless there is a reason you're not using the latest version, please upgrade to version 6.0 - this can be done either by going to: Help --> Check for updates (in later versions: Help --> About Firefox) or uninstalling the current version and installing the newest version from here: Mozilla Firefox Web Browser — Free Download...

- Ad-Aware 2007 - it's a pretty old product, and unless it was a paid version, I recommend you uninstall it... Instead of Ad-Aware, you can use MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware for on-demand scans...

- Service Pack 1 for Windows 7: the latest Service pack for Windows 7 is out (see here: KB976932)! I recommend you install it. It should be available via Windows Update...

- while installing all the critical updates and Service Pack 1, please take a look at the optional updates for Windows as well - I recommend you install optional updates as well, this includes Internet Explorer 9.0 (even if you use Firefox browser only, it's a good idea to keep Internet Explorer up-to-date as well)...

Please let me know if all the updates went well!!.. :)

Hi again hunchbackhunter!!.. :)

I'm glad to see that the problem seems to be resolved now!!.. Thank you for your kind words!!.. :)

If all the updates went well (including Service Pack 1 and any critical updates for Windows), this is the last set of instructions:

Firstly,
To remove all of the tools we used and the files and folders they created do the following:
Double click OTL.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes.
Note: If any tool, file or folder (belonging to the program we have used) hasn't been deleted, please delete it manually.

Secondly,
Please set a new Restore Point to prevent infection from any previous Restore Points.
The easiest and safest way to do this is:
  • Open Control Panel (Start --> Control Panel) and double-click the System icon.
  • Click on the System Protection link on the left. If an UAC (User Account Control) prompt appears, click Continue. Close the System window.
  • Make sure that you have System Protection turned on for your System drive (usually C:\):
    • In Windows 7: On under Protection,
    • In Windows Vista: a box on the left will be checked.
  • Click on the Create button. Give the restore point a name, and click Create. Wait till the new system restore point is created, and click Close.
  • Then go to "Disk Cleanup" which can be found by going to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools.
  • Click "OK" to select the partition or drive you desire (usually C:\).
  • Click the "More Options" Tab.
  • Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous Restore Points except the newly created one. More details and screenshots for Disk Cleanup in Windows Vista can be found here and for Windows 7 here.

Also, I recommend you to read Grinler's excellent article: How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!
