My computer is having issues. It freezes randomly, especially when i'm in firefox. I don't know why. This has been happening for a month. I used to think it was because I had a trojan (which I did) however, the malware removal team in these forums helps me clean up my computer.

I'm not really sure why my computer is freezing up like (lol..it just froze for 30 seconds while I was typing) that. It doesn't matter whether I'm running 1 program or 4- it still freezes. I've had this computer since last July 2010- It's a Dell Inspiron 1318, Windows 7. I also had a new hard drive installed in it (from Dell itself) around April 2011. I have 4 GBs of RAM and 500 GBs of space.

The freezes are usually 30 secs to 1 min long. They're really annoying. I've been considering buying a new computer but I feel guilty doing that without trying anything to fix this one that I already have. I just can't justify buying a new computer when this one should be perfectly fine.

I'm not sure if this is the appropriate forum to get help in so if there is another website or section I should go to instead, let me know.

Any help would be appreciated :)

Please remove Norton: Norton Removal Tool and see if it stops freezing, and in the mean time you can download Microsoft Security Essentials.

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
  • List Minidump Files
Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

Please go to Start then All Programs then Accessories and right click on Command Prompt and select run as administrator.

In the black box type in chkdsk /r and hit y.

Reboot the machine and let chkdsk run.

I uninstalled Bittorrent and restarted and that has made the computer freeze less. Are there any other programs that I can use to load .torrents other than utorrent and Bittorent that won't impact the performance of my computer?

Oh and I still haven't done the desk check. I will do it tonight- it kind of looks like it takes more than a few minutes.

Just a quick question what do you need torrents for?

That doesn't answer my question. I'll find the answer elsewhere.

Torrenting software is usually used for illegal purposes and downloading free software that usually costs money. Some of this software may contain malware by which is installed when you run the torrent download the torrent and install the software. This can attribute to your computer slowness thus my question on why you need a torrenting software, and I think you just answered.
