Hi
Ive been having an issue with Google redirecting me to advertising sites when I click on search results, for example if I searched for 'Wikipedia' on Google, I'd get redirected to an advert for a betting site or something.
It doesn't happen 100% of the time and its only a minor irritation, but if it's a virus, I'd rather get rid of it.

So far I've tried running full scans with Malwarebytes anti-malware, Avast antivirus and Spybot S&D, as well as Kapersky TDSS root kit removing tool, none of which found anything.

I also tried using Hijack This but I didn't really understand what I was looking at when it showed me the scan log.

As I'm typing this, I'm running another full scan of MBAM in the hopes that it might find something.

If it makes any difference, I'm using Firefox 5.0 on Windows 7

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated

Also, I apologize if this is the wrong place to post this

EDIT - MBAMs scan just finished and it found nothing

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.

IMPORTANT! If for some reason GMER refuses to run, try again.
If it still fails, try to UN-check "Devices" in right pane.
If still no joy, try to run it from Safe Mode.

How long does GMER usually take to complete the scan? After nearly 3 hours, I had to stop it before it finished as I wanted to use my computer

GMER may take a while.

Post other logs, so I can see if we can use some substitute tool.

OK you have 32-bit system, so you can run this tool instead of GMER...

Please download Rootkit Unhooker from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
Link 1 (.exe file)
Link 2 (zipped file)
Link 3 (.rar file)In order to use this tool if you downloaded from either of the second two links, you will need to extract the RKUnhookerLE.exe file using a program capable of extracing ZIP and RAR compressed files. If you don't have an extraction program, you can download, install and use the free 7-zip utility.

  • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to start the program.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check Drivers, Stealth, and uncheck the rest.
  • Click OK.
  • Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the report into your next reply.
-- Note: You may get this warning...just ignore it, click OK and continue: "Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself! It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?".

That looks good.

Can you check if IE is getting redirected as well?

IE doesnt appear to be. I tried about 6 or 7 sites and none of them redirected.

That said, it didnt affect FireFox all the time, though when I tried it just now with FireFox it redirected me on the first result

Sorry to bump this, but I still need help with this issue

Google search results are still getting redirected occasionally and Im also noticing that on a lot of the sites I use, Firefox keeps displaying the small drop down at the top of the page telling me that its stopped the page redirecting

I tried running Malwarebytes, Spybot S&D and Hitman 3.5 in safe mode this morning and still no results

I also attempted to run a system restore about an hour ago because my music player went wrong, so I was attempting to fix it by undoing whatever caused it
When it finished, it displayed an error message of;

System restore didnt complete successfully. Your computers system files and setting were not changed.

Details:
System restore failed to extract original copy of the directory from the restore point
Source: %systemroot%\registration
Destination: ComPlusStaging

You can try to run system restore again and choose a different restore point. If this problem persists, you can try an advanced recovery method. For more information see, 'What is recovery?'

I have no idea if thats being caused by this virus, of its just a one off issue. Im reluctant to try the advanced methods in case they make things worse for me

Please download GooredFix from one of the locations below and save it to your Desktop
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2
  • Ensure all Firefox windows are closed.
  • To run the tool, double-click it (XP), or right-click and select Run As Administrator (Vista).
  • When prompted to run the scan, click Yes.
  • GooredFix will check for infections, and then a log will appear. Please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called GooredFix.txt).

After googling near enough every random thing I could think of for the past 7 or 8 minutes, it didnt redirect once. And the dropdown about firefox stopping a redirect doesnt seem to be appearing now either

It looks GooredFix got whatever it was that was causing it

Good news :)

Please run couple more scans for me...

Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

=============================================================================

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner

  • Disable your antivirus program
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Click Start
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Scan archives
  • Click Start
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push List of found threats
  • Click on Export to text file , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
