I recently got a virus which at first did nothing but then began giving fake security messages under the name of "XP Security 2012". My Google searches also began redirecting to advertisements. I followed the guide on bleepingcomputer (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-win-7-antispyware-2012; I got to step 12 but MBAM crashes) to remove the virus but everytime I try to scan the virus either gives me a "access denied" or if I use an inherit.exe, I get into the anti-virus program but the program crashes soon after the scans have started. I have attempted to scan with Malwarebytes (crashes after 2 seconds), Advanced Systemcare, Superantispyware, Hijackthis, and TDSSKiller. Even gmer.exe was blocked from making a scan, as you will see I have no gmer log.

Recently, the popups for XP Security 2012 did go away but many strange looking processes remain, especially apache.exe which uses 25% of my cpu and "randomstringofnumbers".exe. I have tried removing all files that were created since the virus was installed but the virus remains. I have tried in safe mode to manually remove files that looked weird but they either return or I can't delete them since they're "in use". I have also tried scanning in safe mode but, just like in normal mode, all of the programs crash.

If you could give me a hand that would be great! Thank you so much!

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Alright, the virus seems to be blocking combofix. I closed all of my programs and anti-virus programs.

As combo fix is about 75% done extracting, it crashes. Then when I try opening the program again I get the message: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the file." I redownloaded the program and renamed it to asrdgaegaegd.exe
I started it and got to about 50% of extracting when it said: "Error opening file for writing. C:\32788R22FWJFW\NirCmd.cfxxe" and it gives me the option to retry, ignore, and abort. Clicking retry did nothing, ignore allowed the extraction to get to 75% but it crashes there, and abort just closes the combofix extraction.

TDSSKiller crashes 1 second after clicking on start scan. Then when I try opening the program again I get the message: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the file."

Followed the instructions. fixmbr command brought up a warning saying that doing the command might mess up the partitions and asked if I wished to continue. I "y" entered and then the console told me it had rebuilt the boot. I restarted and tried TDSSKiller but I had the same problem as before, crashes after 1 second. All of the virus processes remain.

Try this please. You will need a USB drive.

Download http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/unetbootin-xpud-windows-latest.exe & http://noahdfear.net/downloads/bootable/xPUD/xpud-0.9.2.iso to the desktop of your clean computer
  • Insert your USB drive
  • Press Start > My Computer > right click your USB drive > choose Format > Quick format
  • Double click the unetbootin-xpud-windows-387.exe that you just downloaded
  • Press Run then OK
  • Select the DiskImage option then click the browse button located on the right side of the textbox field.
  • Browse to and select the xpud-0.9.2.iso file you downloaded
  • Verify the correct drive letter is selected for your USB device then click OK
  • It will install a little bootable OS on your USB device
  • Once the files have been written to the device you will be prompted to reboot ~ do not reboot and instead just Exit the UNetbootin interface
  • After it has completed do not choose to reboot the clean computer simply close the installer
  • Next download http://noahdfear.net/downloads/driver.sh to your USB
  • Remove the USB and insert it in the sick computer
  • Boot the Sick computer
  • Press F12 and choose to boot from the USB
  • Follow the prompts
  • A Welcome to xPUD screen will appear
  • Press File
  • Expand mnt
  • sda1,2...usually corresponds to your HDD
  • sdb1 is likely your USB
  • Click on the folder that represents your USB drive (sdb1 ?)
  • Confirm that you see driver.sh that you downloaded there
  • Press Tool at the top
  • Choose Open Terminal
  • Type bash driver.sh
  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a report will be located on your USB drive named report.txt
  • Remove the USB drive and insert back in your working computer and navigate to report.txt

Please note - all text entries are case sensitive
Copy and paste the report.txt for my review

I got as far as plugging the USB into the sick computer. I booted the computer up several times while constantly pressing F12 but each time the computer did not boot into xPUD, instead it continued on it's way to the normal XP Boot. I then changed the computer boot priorities so that it would choose to boot the usb before the hard disk. I rebooted and the computer showed a black screen that said boot error. Every time I type anything it displays another "Boot Error".

It had the same problems as last time, as quoted below. I tried redownloading as well but it still wouldn't work.

"Alright, the virus seems to be blocking combofix.

Clicking retry did nothing, ignore allowed the extraction to get to 75% but it crashes there, and abort just closes the combofix extraction."
