Please help. I keep getting popups and at one time thought I had the winfixer bug but now I get misc. popups from everything. I have used the following to try to remove this.
Norton
adaware
spybot
pestpatrol
ewido
spyware strike remover
atf cleaner
ccleaner
and even the vundoremoval and others that were recommened from Nortons. How do I remove this thing that keeps just coming back like a bad rash. I'm not sure where I even got it because I do not download anything from this computer. Not even pictures.
Thanks so much to whomever can help me.

Hello,

I see you have Viewpoint installed.
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Turn your computer back on.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
By the way.. I see in your winpfind-log you disabled some startupentries, but in your latest hijackthislog, I see they are present in your 'normal startup' again, so I assume you enabled them?

Yes, I actually got that from another thread on the winfixer trojan removal that all startup items need to be active. I have already done the vundofix.exe and it said it didn't find anything. Do I need to do this in safe mode or regular mode?

Hi,

I think you probably used another vundofix before.
As you see, this one worked like a charm.

Just some leftovers in your log to clean up.

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {601ED020-FB6C-11D3-87D8-0050DA59922B} - (no file)
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE
<== this is a resource hog
O9 - Extra button: WeatherBug - {AF6CABAB-61F9-4f12-A198-B7D41EF1CB52} - C:\Program Files\AWS\WeatherBug\Weather.exe (file missing) (HKCU)

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

I see Ccleaner present, so I suggest you run it as well as a final cleanup. :flowers:

Let me know in your next reply how things are running now.

I have a quick question before I do this. Can I remove some of the other things on there that I don't want running at all??

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money\System\mnyviewer.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AOLDialer] C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL\ACS\AOLDial.exe
O4 - Global Startup: America Online 9.0 Tray Icon.lnk = C:\Program Files\America Online 9.0\aoltray.exe

These ones I don't even have on my computer anymore:
O8 - Extra context menu item: &AIM Search - res://C:\Program Files\AIM Toolbar\AIMBar.dll/aimsearch.htm
O8 - Extra context menu item: &AOL Toolbar search - res://C:\Program Files\AOL Toolbar\toolbar.dll/SEARCH.HTML
O8 - Extra context menu item: &eBay Search - res://C:\Program Files\eBay\eBay Toolbar2\eBayTb.dll/RCSearch.html

Also, there are quite a few things listed in my msconfig that I no longer have on my system. How can I remove them also??

Thanks sooooo much for your help.

Another thing I noticed. There are ALOT of programs that are in my winpfind that I no longer have. How can I get them out of there and off of my computer completely? I have tried a few registry cleaners but I'm hesitant on buying one.

Hi,

Well, you may check and fix above in hijackthis as you want, but keep in mind, this deletes the startupkey, it doesn't disable it as in msconfig.
So you can't enable it afterwards again, unless you use the backup option from hijackthis.
Yes, you may delete the entries in msconfig you set to disabled. To delete them, enable them again in your msconfig, run hijackthis and you'll see those items are visible in hijackthis now in the O4-entries. Just check and fix them to delete the startupkey from the registry.

Concerning your winpfind-log... It mostly shows the same as hijackthis does.

A good and free regcleaner is Regcleaner by Jouni Vuoro Software
Keep in mind, be carefull with regcleaners. Make sure the backup option is checked.

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

Install Spywareblaster
SpywareBlaster doesn`t scan and clean for so-called spyware, but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage.

* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. Because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Let your antispywarescanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before.

And I do suggest you perform an online virusscan once in a while. (Housecall and/or Bitdefender). Because what one virusscanner can't find another one maybe can.
Also make sure that your virusscanner, the one that is installed on your system is always up to date!

Make sure your windows has the latest updates: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
