Hello,

Surfsidekick is not your main problem here though... I see a lot of other infections as well which needs a special treatment, so keep in mind we can't fix this all in one post/step.

It's better to print out the next instructions or save it in notepad, because you also have to work in safe mode without networking support, so this page wouldn't be available then.
It is also important you don't miss a step and perform everything in the right order!!

First of all, you don't have an antivirus and firewall present. That's why I want you to install them first, because you are also dealing with a backdoor Trojan which is very nasty.

AVG, AntiVir® OR Avast are good FREE antivirus.
Never install more than one antivirusscanner or firewall on your system! Several together can give problems and decrease the reliability of it seriously!
Zonealarm, Agnitum Outpost Free OR Kerio are FREE firewalls.

Understanding and using firewalls

Perform a full scan with your antivirus and let it delete everything it is finding.

Reboot afterwards!!

Then go to start > controlpanel > software and uninstall next programs if present:

Windows Overlay Components
Network Monitor
VCClient

Reboot once again.

I see you were also dealing with the Alcan Worm previously. I don't see it active anymore, but I want to be sure every leftover is also gone.. so perform next:

Download Brute Force Uninstaller.
Unzip it to a folder of it’s own (c:\BFU).
Read here how to unzip/extract properly:
http://metallica.geekstogo.com/xpcompressedexplanation.html
Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe

Next to the 'scriptfile to execute'-window you'll see a little icon as shown in next picture: Posted Image
When you click that icon, a little window will open that says: 'Please enter the full URL to the sript you want to execute'
In the field, copy and paste next URL:

http://metallica.geekstogo.com/p2pnetwork.bfu

Click Ok
Then click execute in Brute Force Uninstaller.

Wait for the complete script execution box to popup and press OK.
Press exit to terminate the BFU program.

* Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.
This is an important step, otherwise you won't be able to find some files/folders you have to delete afterwards.

* Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.
Do not use it yet.

Please download Ewido anti-malware ; it is a free version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  • Launch ewido by double-clicking on the icon on your desktop.
  • The program will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates
Don't run it yet.

* Reboot into Safe Mode`: ( without networking support !)
°To get into the Safe mode as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key". Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

O23 - Service: NTBOOTMGR (NTBOOT) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DRIVER\ntuser.exe
O23 - Service: Windows Overlay Components - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\ciusbev.exe

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

* Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them if still present:

C:\Program Files\Network Monitor <== folder
C:\Documents and settings\yourusername\application data\netmon <== folder
C:\WINDOWS\ciusbev.exe
C:\windows\winsysban.exe
C:\WINDOWS\ciusbevA.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\VCClient <== folder
C:\WINDOWS\TWlsZXMgVmluY2VudCBHcmltZXM <== folder
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DRIVER\ntuser.exe <== please DON'T delete a file called ntuser.dat present on your computer. Please look in the right place as described above!!

It could be possible you won't find some items anymore, because your antivirusscanner already dealed with it if you performed my steps in the right order.

* Still in safe mode Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

* Open Ewido anti-malware
Click on scanner

* Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
* When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
* Save the report to your desktop

Close Ewido

* Reboot your system back to normal mode.

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread together with the ewidolog and a new hijackthislog.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

if you receive, while running option #1, an error similar like: ''C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe
C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt the system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and microsoft windows applications. choose close to terminate the application..".
Then please use option 5 or the web page link in the l2mfix folder to solve this error condition. do not run the fix portion without fixing this first.

OMG! thank you so much for doing this for me! i think i am doing everything correctly...i still get a few popups though...should i not be getting popups? the 12mfix, there was no "option number one" or "Run Find Log." so obviously, i won't get to post that log. here are the two others:

Hello,

It is normal that you still get popups, because that's why we need L2Mfix.
Not sure what you did exactly with L2Mfix, but I think you did something wrong in there.
When you open the L2Mfix-folder on your desktop, there's a file in it called l2m.bat
Doubleclick it.
It will first show you a black screen with some info and then it will say to press a key to proceed.
Then you'll see a green window as you see here:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiem...l2mfixgreen.JPG

There you have to type 1 and press enter. (as you see in the screenshot, I already typed 1 in there)
So please try it again.

Hi,

Yes, the problems you are having with Look2me are normal, that's what we are doing now to get rid of it.

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter. The fix will start. Please don't use your keyboard while the fix is running! Your desktop and icons will disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, it will be ready for a reboot. When asked, Press any key to reboot. After the reboot notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!
If after the reboot the log does not open double click on it in the l2mfix folder.

Ok, that went well..

Still some steps you have to perform though..

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: ModuleUsage - C:\WINDOWS\system32\dxintf.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: SideBySide - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hr8805lue.dll (file missing)
O23 - Service: Command Service (cmdService) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\TWlsZXMgVmluY2VudCBHcmltZXM\command.exe (file missing)
O23 - Service: NTBOOTMGR (NTBOOT) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DRIVER\ntuser.exe (file missing)

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Then, go to start > run and copy and paste next commands one by one in the field:

sc delete cmdservice Click enter

Again in the field, copy and paste:

sc delete NTBOOT Click enter

Reboot and post a new hijackthislog. Also tell me how things are running now. :flowers:

And I see a clean log.

P.S. how bad was my computer?

Well, it was pretty bad yes.

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

Install Spywareblaster
SpywareBlaster doesn`t scan and clean for so-called spyware, but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage.

* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. Because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Let your antispywarescanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before.

And I do suggest you perform an online virusscan once in a while. (Housecall and/or Bitdefender). Because what one virusscanner can't find another one maybe can.
Also make sure that your virusscanner, the one that is installed on your system is always up to date!

Make sure your windows has the latest updates: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

If you are having XP SP2, read here how to configure Security Features for Internet Explorer:
