Notes:
Symptoms-
Most files hidden (resolved)
Task Manager Disabled (resolved)
iexplorer.exe service running with no browser on (still issue periodically)
Randomly excessive High RAM/Memory usage up to 0 available memory (still issue kinda)
Websites redirecting (resolved?)

Attempt to resolve-
Force shut down PC before fake program got to far.
Have NOT used ComboFix as instructed
Only used Hijackthis to create log as detailed in tutorial
Previously removed registry entry I determined was from per Remove Windows Vista Repair (Uninstall Guide: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main "Use FormSuggest" = 'yes'
Ran CCleaner (didn't know it wasn't recommended til I found this site)
Used System restore back a week
Ran unhide.exe
Ran rkill
Ran MBAM and SAS, but neither found virus
Ran McAfee AV from ATT, and it found and removed 3 instances of FakeAlert!grb in C:\ProgramData (item P1kAIMiG2Kb7Fz)
Ran TDSS Rootkit Removal Tool from Kaspersky, and it found and rewrote Rootkit.Boot.SST.a
Ran OTM and reset HOSTS file
Ran MBRcheck to view log and noticed "Windows XP MBR code detected," when I have Vista
Upgraded 1GB RAM to 4GB RAM to allow room for AV on hard drive instead of faulty Panda Cloud, yet most of RAM is used up and still litte free memory.

Goal-
**Want to ensure that my PC is clean and safe to use and no keyloggers so that I can do my online banking safely and have more speed from new RAM.

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

3) Symptoms:
Most files hidden (resolved)
Task Manager Disabled (resolved)
iexplorer.exe service running with no browser on (still issue periodically)
Randomly excessive High RAM/Memory usage up to 0 available memory (still issue kinda)
10 svchost.exe services running several with very high memory usage (still issue kinda)
Websites redirecting (resolved?)
High memory being used even after upgrading RAM from 1GB to 4GB
Some items in registry that should be there or may have been modified by FakeAlert!grb or Rootkit.Boot.SST.a
For example, I removed registry entry I determined was from fraudulent per Remove Windows Vista Repair (Uninstall Guide): HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main "Use FormSuggest" = 'yes'
Unsure what to do with other suspects. Please advise.
Registry item was causing all my logins to be saved in dialog boxes and for previous text to appear in said boxes when attempting to scroll down with "down" arrow.

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

I think it will take me a while to know if my pc is functioning any better. Still looks likes alot of RAM is being used in idle for having 4GB now. Can I turn the CD emulator back on now or later? After running Combofix, and going to bleepingcomputer.com, I got a dialog window stating that I'm about to use a secure connection, ok? I checked "don't ask again" and clicked yes, and I had to do it twice. Is that a problem? That's something that occurred after I got the virus, but it would always me even after checking "don't ask again. So what does my log mean? Is it ok that Combofix deleted those files? The others look like fake files, but ntuser.dat didn't. Is that one ok?

I want you to run this tool for me next.

tdsskiller:

Please read carefully and follow these steps.
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

I've run this program before, and and it found and rewrote Rootkit.Boot.SST.a as it wasn't able to cure it. I've attached that log in a zip file. Also MBRcheck that I ran before showed "Windows XP MBR code detected." I don't know if that resulted from the virus or TDSSkiller rewriting the rootkit.boot.sst file to a standard format.

Hello

Keeping Autorun enabled on USB and other removable drives has become a significant security risk due to the increasing number of malware variants that can infect them and transfer the infection to your computer. Read USB-Based Malware Attacks and Please disable Autorun asap!.

Disabling autorun/autoplay does not prevent you from accessing your media sources. They are still available by opening My Computer and accessing the source drive (CD, DVD, usb/flash drive or external hard drive). Pictures on a camera can still be accessed through My Pictures and selecting Get Pictures from a scanner or camera. Media can also be accessed via the program you normally use it with such as music CDs accessed via Media Player, blank CDs via burning software, image handling software provided with the camera, etc. I strongly recommend you leave the autorun feature disabled and get into the habit of accessing your media devices manually.

If you still insist on turning autoruns back on then run this program here - Autoplay Repair Wizard

Autorun is already disabled. I did that a long time ago. What to my logs mean? Is my pc clean and safe to do sensitive functions? Can I use the defogger to re-enable the cd emulator? Why do my svchost.ext processes use so much memory? One is using 212,000K right now.

Hello

Very sorry sent you the wrong instructions

Lets get a deeper look into the system and see if something shows up.

Download and run OTL

Download OTL by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click on OTL.exe to run it.
  • Under Output, ensure that Minimal Output is selected.
  • Under Extra Registry section, select Use SafeList.
  • Click the Scan All Users checkbox.
  • Click on Run Scan at the top left hand corner.
  • When done, two Notepad files will open.
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened and the that I need posted back here
    • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized - save this one on your desktop in case I ask for it later
  • Please post the contents of OTListIt.txt in your next reply.

OTL has frozen, it is not responding, and has changed my file settings so that my protecting system file are showing, my hidden files are showing, and known file extensions are showing. It's acting like the virus. I was able to end the program in Task Manager. And set my view settings back to default.

Can you please answer some of my questions?

Hello

Not much is showing in the reports - that is why I am running different scans to make sure it is not malware causing svchost.exe to run so high

svchost.exe is used by many normal prosses and if one is not working correct then it causes this problem - it can also be caused by malware (but so far it does not look like this)

I want you to restart the computer and try OTL again

I've tried a couple of times now, and it keeps freezing at Scanning Firefox settings. Is that why it's freezing?
