All Exe Files Changed To Lnk File Extension

All of my programs (exe files) have been changed to .lnk and do not execute. I cannot use any of my programs or download any security tool or software as it is changed to .lnk Please does anyone know
how I can manually restore my system?

For Windows XP go to the following page and click on the link for item number 12, "EXE Fix for Windows XP":

You would need to download the .reg file to someplace convenient where you can access it, such as your Desktop or a floppy disk, then double click it to merge the contents into the Registry and reboot the computer.

When I download the .reg file it states it's an unknow file and will not let me open it. How do I fix this problem?

I consulted with Skate_Punk_21, one of our Hijack This team members and he suggests you download the zipped batch file from Easy File Associations for Windows XP. Make sure it is the zipped one.

If that works follow the steps in our Preparation Guide for use before posting a HijackThis Log.

Let us know if that works for you.
