I can only use solid colors for my desktop. All of the other desktop choices are grey and I can't select any of them.

Are you limited to 16 color 640X480 also? If yes, you need to reinstall your graphics adapter drivers.

Did you get a virus on your computer when you noticed you couldn't do nething w/ the background? First id make sure your virus free. AVG, trendmicro, and pandasoft are all free. Also look for some suggested adware type programs. If your free and clear of everything then go to the start menu and then run regedit. once in regedit follow the subfolders i listed below and delete C:\Windows\Web\desktop.html
HKEY_CURRENT USER/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/WINDOWS/CURRENTVERSION/POLICIES/SYSTEM
I found that on a another message board and it did the trick for me. Still cant get my icons back to drop shadow they are surrounded by blue still. hope that helps

NOTE:

NEVER MAKE CHANGES TO YOUR REGISTRY WITHOUT BACKING IT UP FIRST!

I back up my registry weekly as part of my computer maintince. I burn a backup of the registry to a multisession CD. It's only overkill if you never need it.

ERUNT - free here: http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/

Comes with a "readme" file that details how to automate the backups using Task Scheduler.

I've also read that you can use MSBackup to backup the System State (and this includes the registry) - but haven't tried it.
