Hi, my name is Patti and I need help.

I'm running windows XP professional and some how ended up with a malware problem.
I have to keep restarting to get my programs to launch.
In safe mode there are a few pop ups when I first log on.
I was working in virus forum but it was suggested that I try here since nothing has been working.

Here is the link for that discussion as it had been suggested I link it.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic411999.html/page__view__getnewpost

I would appreciate any help I can get as a system recovery is not an option, I don't have the CDs any longer and can't afford to take my puter to anyone and reinstall my xp professional and office.

I've attacehd the DDS log and the original GMER log from virus help forum.
I've also attached the gmer log that I did in safe mode because my normal access is now getting limited.

Thank you for your help.

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Will i be able to do any of this in safe mode?
What if I can't get any thing to launch in regular mode...
It's been about a week since I've turned the computer on so I'm not sure what will be available to me since the last time nothing was able to launch and I turned it off.
Usually if I reboot, I can get on line for a few minutes....I wil have to do logs in stages because of this, I'll post back as soon as I give it a try and let you know whats going on...thank you so much for your response.

DDS can be done in safe mode - RKUnhooker cannot

if you can do them in normal mode that is best if not do DDS in safe mode

Well I tried to get something done tonight but computer is in real bad shape. This I think is going to be a challenge and may even be hopeless.
I spent two hours and managed to get on line long enough to run the Defogger and thas as far as I got...tried to download dds but having trouble. Computer keeps freezing up and not responding...I have to get up for work in the AM so I will attemp the DDS tomorrow .
I just wanted to let you know that I may be slow to respond as progress may not be as expected.
I'm on a laptop at the moment...thanks for being patient and for your help if I can get something to work.

Hi Gringo,
It took me about 3 hours to get these logs.
Before I did them, I restored to an earlier unaffected time. I deleted a couple of the other programs I downloaded from the virus forum. I seem to be getting up and running a little better then before. I can open folders ok but when I try to open a file within that folder, very slow to respond....
I did not read your reply about the tds killer until after I struggled through the logs. I have not run it since instructions say not to make changes after you run logs so I didn't do anything other. I'm getting a few pop ups and then I'll get through a few steps and I freeze up and nothing responds so I have to manually shut down and reboot to get things to work again.
I'll wait to hear from you after you see the logs.
Again, these logs were done before I seen your message to do TDS so that has not been done.
Thanks again for your time.
Patti

Hello

Since you were able to get me those reports lets run this first

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Well I believe we made some progress here.
First thing I noticed right away is that the red fake virus shield is gone from my toolbar.
I also can tell things are quicker to respond but I've not moved around too much as I wanted to get this log posted before I jinxed myself.
I was able to do the combo fix without being asked to reboot and soon after to log in and post the log without freezing up in the email link to here and so on....
I'll end this here for now to give you time to look at the log and possibly tell me what was going on. I'm not sure if I should restart my computer or not so I'll just log off for now and wait for your response.

Patti

Earlier I had left the computer on and had gone out, upon my return, IE was froze adn a couple of Goodle redirect pop up tabs were visiable. I couldn;t do anything so I manuall shut down and rebooted.
Once I logged back in and seen your direction to run the TDS killer, did that right away...looked as if maliscious somthing was found and default cure and reboot. This reboot seem to start faster and also logging into IE was a bit quicker and so was the link to here. And no redirect anything...

I am thinking so far so good....I will wait to see what you think after veiwing the log. I am running much better but I am going to leave the computer for a bit as is to see if it stalls.

You are doing a fantastic job and I can't thank you enough for your help.
Patti

I must say that it was very nice to click on IE and have it open up with out being redirected. It still took a good couple of minutes but once loaded amd I clicked on my email, that opened up well and then clicked on the link to get here and right here I came....
I've attached the combofix for you.
One question that I thought of....Defogger was disabled when we first started, did it alutmatically enable at reboot or do we still have to go back and enable it...not sure what it is but just thought to ask.

Much appreciated ....

I'll check back in the morning to see how we are doing here....

IE opened up easily after about 2 minutes....went straight to email and opened well along with the link to here all went one right after the other...very nice indeed. No pops ups or redirections. I guess I'll leave my computer on (not internet) and see if it stalls at some point...
I do have one question, when we started these procedures, I disabled defogger, did that enable itself after the reboot or is this something that I'll have to do? I'm not sure what it is but I do remember that I did it.
attached is the log...I'll cehck back in the morning.
thanks
Patti

Greetings

Good That cleaned up some bad guys but I see some other stuff that we need to go after, so I want you to run this custom script for me.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

File::
c:\windows\system32\terlmw32.dll
c:\windows\system32\term1w32.dll

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\terlmw32]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\termsvces]

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Posted Image
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • report from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now after running the script?
