This is my first experience with this. The PC is restarting and the blue screen stop error message is coming up saying hardware or software caused the shut down. Any ideas? I'm ignorant to all of this.

My computer is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+ with 2.19 Ghz and 896 of RAM and I'm running Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 3.

Another not; this all started around the time of an update to Realtek High Def Audio, which I don't even use. I've installed the update so the device is working properly and still am having problems, so maybe that has nothing to do with it.

Download BlueScreenView:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html
unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All
Go to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the content, and paste it into your next reply

Also, why did you update the Realtek device?

I updated Realtek because Device Manager said it was not working properly and I thought that was the cause of the problem

Here's what MS says: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/329284

You said you don't use the realtek device? Then try rolling back the driver in device manager or disable the device in device manager and let's see if there is indeed any relationship with the bsod

I had it in safe mode for a day and noting happened. Since I took it out of safe mode I've had two blue screen episodes.

Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three items) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming procedure, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem.
After you've isolated the cause, do not use msconfig to permanently disable the process. Instead, if it is a service go to START - RUN and type: services.msc (then press enter) and disable the service OR, if it a program, you can download & run a simple app such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) to enable, disable, or otherwise manage startup programs.
