Hi folks,

Got a problem on my machine that I haven't managed to get rid of so far and could do with some help. It seems that a lot of processing power and memory are being used by something, I think it is a svchost.exe from the look of things and random screens screens kept opening in IE (I can't recall their websites now, sorry). I spent a while force closing process' that looked problematic and managed to get enough time to start a system restore on the computer (it would not open previously), which stopped the random screens but it wouldn't let me open FireFox or IE at all. After closing some more process' I managed to get onto IE to install and run Superantispyware and Malwarebytes which seemed to clean a few things out and I can use IE now, but not FF. Now, I keep getting a message from Malwarebytes, relating to svchost.exe.
"Successfully blocked access to a potentially malicious website: 67.29.139.131, Type: outgoing, Port:54332. Process:svchost.exe" (website and port changes, get this every 3 or 4 minutes now)
I also keep getting a windows alert "Host Process for Windows Services stopped working and was closed. A problem caused the application to stop working correctly. Windows will notify you if a solution is available"
Also the Vista appearance keeps reverting to a mix of basic and normal... like all the colours are gone, if that makes any sense. The other thing I have noticed is Adchoices, I now have random words hyperlinked in websites in either green or blue, with a double underline. not sure if it is related or a seperate issue.

I would certainly appreciate any help with this, and my thanks in advance.
I have followed all the preperation guidelines for new posts and my DDS log is as follows;

Hi Gringo,
Thanks for helping me out with this!

I have followed your instructions, a little problem arose when i ran RKUnhooker. It crashed the computer a bit, tried to ctrl, alt.del but just came up with a black screen, then error message "logon process has failed to create the security options dialog. FAILURE - Security Options" I pressed ok, the tried ctrlaltdel for task manager again and got the same screen. I turned off my PC to reboot, as the restart button in windows was not responding. On restart, I was able to run RKunhook ok.

here are the logs you asked for.

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Hi Gringo,
thanks for reopening this.

I have run combofix as you asked. It ran without any problems and deleted two files. It did not restart at any point.

The computer still seems to be in the same state as before, however, as most of the original symptoms are still present.
There is no longer the double underline hyperlinks on random words in webpages, but Firefox still won't open and processor and memory are being used up quite a bit even with no programs running, but is not as bad as before however.
With just IE open to write this message, about 50% of processor and 50% of memory are being used.

I am also still getting "Host Process for Windows Services stopped working and was closed" message. Windows cites "Data Execution Prevention" as the reason for closing the service.

Hope the log file helps.
Many thanks.

I want you to run this tool for me next.

tdsskiller:

Please read carefully and follow these steps.
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Hi Gringo,

Ran killer again.
found nothing. machine seems to be slightly more behaved now though. I mean Firefox won't open and memory use is running high, but I haven't had the "host process stopped working" thing come up yet today. I opened a few programs to see how they worked out and they opened ok without causing any crashes or 'host' errors etc. I have noticed the double underline hyperlinks are still about though, ADChoices pop ups when you hover over.
here is the report.

Hello

Lets get a deeper look into the system and see if something shows up.

Download and run OTL

Download OTL by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click on OTL.exe to run it.
  • Under Output, ensure that Minimal Output is selected.
  • Under Extra Registry section, select Use SafeList.
  • Click the Scan All Users checkbox.
  • Click on Run Scan at the top left hand corner.
  • When done, two Notepad files will open.
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened and the that I need posted back here
    • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized - save this one on your desktop in case I ask for it later
  • Please post the contents of OTListIt.txt in your next reply.
