Hi,

I'm having issues with removing the Google Redirect Virus. My computer is starting to slow down with it. I've already updated my Symantec Endpoint Proection but it didn't pick it up. I also have used TDSSKILLER and Hitman to try to remove it but none of these worked as well.

Help would be appreciated, thanks :)

I'm running Windows 7

Welcome aboard Posted Image

Download Security Check from HERE, and save it to your Desktop.

* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

=============================================================================

Please download MiniToolBox and run it.

Checkmark following boxes:
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
Click Go and post the result.

=============================================================================

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/ to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Be sure to restart the computer.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.

IMPORTANT! If for some reason GMER refuses to run, try again.
If it still fails, try to UN-check "Devices" in right pane.
If still no joy, try to run it from Safe Mode.

Is redirection still present?

Download aswMBR to your desktop.
Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it.
Click the "Scan" button to start scan:

On completion of the scan click "Save log", save it to your desktop and post in your next reply:

NOTE. aswMBR will create MBR.dat file on your desktop. This is a copy of your MBR. Do NOT delete it.

There is still redirection. However, I get a popup in my taskbar from MalwareBytes every time the trojan tries to redirect me to the page- the program stops it.

I haven't run SuperAntiSpyware yet but the MBR scan log that i posted earlier was actually not completely accurate. I thought it had completed but it was still going.

so here's the complete log for the MBR thing that I ran. I don't know if it makes a difference. Let me know if I still show do the SUPERAntiSpyware step you posted above. Thanks for the help!

It looks like it found infected file:

8:36:50.614 File: C:\ProgramData\api-ms-win-core-misc-l1-1-032.exe **INFECTED** Win32:Tracur-CB [Trj]

Instead of Super....

Please click HERE to download Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool.

  • Double click on the file you just downloaded and let it install.
  • It will install to your desktop (be patient; it may take a while).
  • Accept license agreement and click "Start" button.
  • Click on Settings button Posted Image
    • In Scan scope leave pre-checked items as they're and also checkmark My Computer
    • In Actions checkmark Select action: (disinfect; delete if disinfection fails) instead of preselected Prompt on detection
  • Click on Automatic Scan tab and then click on Start scanning button.
  • Before it is done it may prompt for action regardless of the setting so choose delete if prompted.
  • When the scan is done NO log will be produced.
  • Click on Report button Posted Image then on Automatic Scan report tab.
  • Right click anywhere within right pane, click Select All then right click again and click Copy.
  • This will copy the items that it found to the clipboard you can then open notepad (go to start then run then type in notepad) and choose paste to paste the contents into Notepad.
  • You can save this on the desktop.
  • Post the contents of the document in your next reply.

Ok, so I did the above step and I got to this part:
-Before it is done it may prompt for action regardless of the setting so choose delete if prompted.
It asked me to reboot the computer to delete the files, so I selected 'yes'.

I don't know where the program is installed so I can't retrieve the log file. Do you know where I can find it? I know where the file for the .exe is but not the program- i even looked in the start menu but it's not there.

I tried rerunning it at least 4 times. The problem is that I click on the .exe program, it shows up, it installs and doesn't go beyond that (to the part where it asks me to agree to the user agreement). It just 'disappears' but it's still running in the background because it shows up in the Task Manager.

here's an image of the Task Manager

I've already tried "End Processing" all the Kaspersky processes in the Task Manager and re-downloaded the program from the website.

Any other ideas?
