Problem: I am getting continuous IExplorer popup windows about every three minutes or so. I have performed the actions below but am obviously missing something, likely something obvious to the expert.

Action to date: Having worked with OldTimer in August I did all the basic actions he suggested. I then reviewed your prep guide and did all of those (except I couldn’t get Panda to run). Here is a summary of what was done, with reboots, in and out of safe mode –

Deleted temp and other files
All tools used were updated first and configured as OldTimer had recommended
Ran Norton A/v
Ran TrendMicro Housecall
Ran Bit Defender (Log attached)
Ran MacAfee Stinger
Updated and ran CWShredder
Ran AdAware (log attached)
Ran SpyBot (log attached)
Ran HJT (log attached)
Run all of the Microsoft Updates.

So I have run out of ideas. I am way better off than I was but can’t seem to finish it off. Suggestions?

Reports: First HJT, then AdAware, Then SpyBot, and just for interest Bit Defender:

Ola Sir LonMon and Welcome back Bro!

I see the kiddos have been hard at work on the poor PC!

Go to Add\Remove Programs and Remove

Network Monitor

Please Download the l2mfix from
http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
or
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe.

Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop.

Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter.

This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log.

Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

If you recieve any errors while attempting to run Option 1 of the l2mfix similar to these

C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe or C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt

"The system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and microsoft windows applications"

Choose "Close to terminate the application"

Then please use option 5 of the l2mfix or the web page link in the l2mfix folder to solve this error condition.

DO NOT run the fix portion without repairing this first.

Cretemonster -

Removed Network Monitor (am unfamiliar with Win2000 so that's why I didn't do that before) Tool worked as desired. Followed all instructions and am posting log below. Option 1 worked exactly as we wanted the first time. Standing by... LonMon

What a wonderful day in the world of concrete!

Go to Safe Mode and Run Option 2 of the l2mfix.

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then it will ask for a password enter bye (lowercase) then hit enter.

Your desktop and icons will disappear (this is normal).

L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, it will be ready for a reboot.

Press any key to reboot.

After the reboot notepad will open with a log.

Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!
If after the reboot the log does not open double click on it in the l2mfix folder.

As soon as the system reboots, run a scan over the system and remove all the scanner finds,no logs will be produced, this is just to assist us a little.

Download Ewido Anti-Malware Micro Scanner (English language only)
http://www.ewido.net/en/onlinescan/

Double Click ewido_micro.exe

If your active firewall prompts you, allow connections to this program.

Make sure all 4 boxes are checked and click "Start Scan"

Once the Scan has completed,be sure all items found have a check by them and click "Remove Infections"

Click "Yes" to the prompt that follows.

Go ahead and Post the results from Option 2 of the l2mfix,then Download WinPFind:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/winpfind.php

Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"

Don't use it yet

Reboot into SAFE MODE(Tap F8 when restarting)
Here is a link on how to boot into Safe Mode:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...src=sec_doc_nam

From the WinPFind folder-> Doubleclick WinPFind.exe and Click "Start Scan"

It will scan the entire System, so please be patient

Once you see "Scan Complete"-> a log (WinPFind.txt) will be automatically generated in the WinPFind folder

Restart Normal and post the results of the WinPFind scan into its own post.

When I ran the batch file it looked like it didn't find what it needed to run the second batch file. Only took a couple seconds. The log is here though so maybe you can tell, as well as a fresh HJT log. Wasn't sure what you meant by "As soon as the system reboots, run a scan over the system and remove all the scanner finds,no logs will be produced, this is just to assist us a little." Been doing so many scans with different tools...

Going to the Ewido scan now.

Cretemonster _

here is the WinPFind log. I am actually able to use the PC now to post these. Major progress!!!

==============

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Technology is fundamentally worthless if you don't understand the problem you are trying to solve.

AllRight LonMon!! Great Job!

Now is when I want you to run the Ewido Anti-Malware Micro Scanner

Remove whatever it finds.

After that,Download WinPFind:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/winpfind.php

Run MSCONFIG and enable everything in the startup area. To get to MSCONFIG, click on Start -> Run -> type in MSCONFIG -> click OK!

Under the "General" Tab

Make Sure "Normal Startup-load all device drivers and services" has a green tick by it

Click Apply->Close->Follow the Prompts to Restart

Restart Normal and have the PC Scanned here:
Panda Active Scan

You will need to be using Internet Explorer for the Scan to work

Save the Report it generates

Post back with a fresh HijackThis log and the reports from WinPFind and Panda

Cretemonster -

Couple weird things. One, I couldn't find MSCONFIG anywhere in my system so I couldn't run it. Second, and also strange, Panda Active Scan, even though it loaded the definitions wouldn't respond to my "clicks" to start so I couldnt run it either. Sooo ...here are the HJT and WinPFind logs. The system is behaving very well so I think we are close. I smell success.....

Looking much better!

If you will,go to this Upload Site

Upload these 3 files please

C:\413_13_op.exe

C:\WINNT\vwbhenv.exe

C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\ger.exe

Copy the text below to a blank notepad page and save it to the desktop as Clr.reg but dont run it yet.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\mmxfkqfg]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{8c30d28c-aff1-452d-a67e-58e5ecab4d8b}]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"winsync"=-

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer\Run]
"symmin"=-

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer\Run]

Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\0go4efoy.dll
    C:\WINNT\system32\kkwfk.dll
    C:\413_13_op.exe
    C:\WINNT\vwbhenv.exe
    C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\ger.exe
    C:\WINNT\system32\ppcwok.exe
    C:\WINNT\system32\symmin.exe

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
  • Select Delete on Reboot and Unregister .dll before Deleting
  • then Click on the All Files button.
  • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

Restart in Safe Mode.

Open Killbox again,Copy each entry above into Killbox, one at a time to confirm nothing survived.

As you paste each entry in,place a tick by any of these selections available

"Standard File Kill"
"End Explorer Shell while Killing File"
"Unregister .dll before Deleting"

Click the Red Circle with the White X in the Middle to Delete

Locate and Double click Clr.reg and allow it to merge into the registry.

Still in Safe Mode,Scan once more with WinPFind.

Restart Normal and Download The Hoster from here:
http://www.funkytoad.com/download/hoster.zip

Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"

Open Hoster and Make sure that the "Make Hosts Writable?" button in the upper right corner is Enabled

Click "Back up Host files"

Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK"

Exit the Program.

Open IE and Click Tools-> Internet Options-> Programs and then click "Reset Web Settings"

Now go back and Click the Advanced Tab and then Click "Restore Defaults"

Lets also check some of the IE Settings

1. From within Internet Explorer click the Tools menu and then click on Internet Options.
2. Click once on the Security tab
3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
