Hello,

I'm been experiencing several issues recently and cannot locate the issue.

1.) No Sound in Internet Explorer
2.) Redirected to incorrect sites when following a google search link
3.) Some of my folders show "empty," when I believe they should show contents

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Tim

Welcome aboard Posted Image

Let's see, if we can recover your missing features.
Download and run UnHide
Let me know, if it worked.

==============================================

Download Security Check from HERE, and save it to your Desktop.

* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

=============================================================================

Please download MiniToolBox and run it.

Checkmark following boxes:
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
Click Go and post the result.

=============================================================================

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.

IMPORTANT! If for some reason GMER refuses to run, try again.
If it still fails, try to UN-check "Devices" in right pane.
If still no joy, try to run it from Safe Mode.

Download TDSSKiller and save it to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory (usually C:\ folder) in the form of TDSSKiller_xxxx_log.txt. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Very well :)

How is computer doing?

Please download Rootkit Unhooker from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
Link 1 (.exe file)
Link 2 (zipped file)
Link 3 (.rar file)In order to use this tool if you downloaded from either of the second two links, you will need to extract the RKUnhookerLE.exe file using a program capable of extracing ZIP and RAR compressed files. If you don't have an extraction program, you can download, install and use the free 7-zip utility.

  • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to start the program.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check Drivers, Stealth, and uncheck the rest.
  • Click OK.
  • Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the report into your next reply.
-- Note: You may get this warning...just ignore it, click OK and continue: "Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself! It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?".

Hi Broni,

Files are visible.

Sound is now available on websites.

I can follow links to the appropriate websites within IE.

I have not been experiencing any craziness, but with all the reports and things you have had me run, I don't know where I stand. Can you provide me a status of what you have been able to determine?

The main issue is that I have a 6 & 8 year old that are becoming very computer literate, but also don't understand that following every pop-up is a bad thing. I know, bad parenting.....

Anyway, here's the result of the latest report from the Rootkit Unhooker:

Good news :)

Your main culprit was a rootkit, which we killed with TDSSKiller.

Last steps...

Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

=============================================================================

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner

  • Disable your antivirus program
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Click Start
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Scan archives
  • Click Start
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push List of found threats
  • Click on Export to text file , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.

NOTE: you did not day to delete the infected files. I've left the scanner open so that I can do so, but didn't want to mess up your instructions, as you have been pretty specific so far.

Here's the log from the ESET Scanner ---

C:\Program Files\DictionaryBoss\bar\2.bin\v4datact.dll a variant of Win32/Toolbar.MyWebSearch.A application cleaned by deleting - quarantined
C:\Program Files\DictionaryBoss\bar\2.bin\v4html.dll probably a variant of Win32/Toolbar.MyWebSearch.F application cleaned by deleting - quarantined
C:\Program Files\DictionaryBoss\bar\2.bin\v4htmlmu.dll probably a variant of Win32/Toolbar.MyWebSearch.B application cleaned by deleting - quarantined
C:\Program Files\DictionaryBoss\bar\2.bin\v4Plugin.dll a variant of Win32/Toolbar.MyWebSearch application cleaned by deleting - quarantined
C:\Program Files\DictionaryBoss\bar\2.bin\v4skin.dll a variant of Win32/Toolbar.MyWebSearch.P application cleaned by deleting - quarantined

Thanks again,

Yes, deleting those files is what you want to do.

Uninstall Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

Update Adobe Reader

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
Note. If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Alternatively, you can uninstall Adobe Reader (33.5 MB), download and install Foxit PDF Reader(3.5MB) from HERE.
It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.
Note: When installing FoxitReader, make sure to UN-check any pre-checked toolbar, or any other garbage.

Broni,

One thing before we part ways.....

Should I be experiencing substantially slower load times at start up? Also with Internet Explorer startup?

I've read about the extra protection added some lag time, but this seems to be significant (5-10 seconds extra, maybe more).

Any thoughts?

BTW - I have completed all the steps that you outlined.

I'm sure I can look this up somewhere, but am I able to set up Parental Controls on a per-account basis (ie - for my kids) and let the parent's accounts be "free range"?

Again, Many Thanks to you.....You have got me back to 95%.... 100% would be minus the lag.

Tim

You're very welcome Posted Image

I really would worry about an extra 5-10 seconds.
It's really meaningless.

Hi Broni,

Now that I'm back to "clean," which I'm sure is a relative term in the cyber world, I cannot access my online banking, which is a secure site. When I type my username and hit enter, the page just resets as if I did not type anything in. Is there a setting that I missed that should allow this to happen?

I can access the secure site on other computers, just not my desktop.

Can you assist?

Thanks,

Tim
