Hi, and thanks so much for your very generous assistance!

Summary -
Windows 7 Home Premium --- 64-bit
Firefox 3.6.16 (default)
Internet Explorer 8
Thunderbird 3.0.11 (default)
Avast free version
Windows Firewall - On

random unknown files trying to "phone home" - blocked by Avast
many programs have disappeared

Ran Malwarebytes - found nothing
Ran Panda ActiveScan online - found Trj/Sinowal.WXX and Bck/Bredolab.AE, & dozens of cookies
- found the two in email, surprised by that - we're extremely cautious
Followed your prep instructions -
- unhide
~ hidden files, folders, or drives
~ extensions for known file types
~ protected operating system files
- Windows Firewall - On
- Ran DeFogger
- Ran DDS - log files included here
- Can't run GMER (have Win7/64)

Details -
Another regular user of this computer was on same websites as usual & reading email (she never opens junk email) yesterday evening (7/27), nothing unusual until Avast began giving notice of blocking connections to urls every 10 or 15 minutes. Eventually she shut down the computer for the evening.

Within minutes after I booted up this morning, I began getting the same/similar Avast messages, the most recent is the same thing over the last 5 hours -

"Malicious URL blocked. Avast Network Shield has blocked a threat.
The threat was detected and blocked just before connecting to the url.
Object: www.newaitz.com/borders.php (first several this morning was 188.72.228.113/twere.exe)
Infection: URL:Mal
Action: Blocked
Process: C:\Windows\TEMP\Ihh.exe" (that's capital i hh, not L hh)
(first Process this morning was Windows\system32\consrv.dll, Avast log said it was moved to C:\Windows\explorer.exe)"

(Probably unnecessary, but, respectfully mentioning, found consrv.dll info at www.securelist.com/en/blog/493/MAX_sets_its_sights_on_x64_platforms - [snip] ... Bleeding Life exploit kit. drive-by ... In particular, Acrobat Reader and Java. ... MAX++ Trojan-Downloader is installed. ...downloads the appropriate MAX++ dropper. ...dropper specially compiled for x64 systems ...does not contain a rootkit. ...body of dropper placed in system32 folder under the name consrv.dll. ...x64 version of MAX++ is installed by injecting itself into the services.exe process. What makes an infected x64 system difficult to treat is the malware's autorun key: if the file is deleted without repairing the registry key, the BSOD will appear when the system attempts to boot.)

Also new browser tabs popping open occasionally with a variety of urls: pops.dazzlingseek.com, pops.thepurple-search.com, and others similar, every 2 hours or so, a string of 2 or 3 at a time.

- Ran Malwarebytes - found nothing
- Ran Panda ActiveScan online - found Trj/Sinowal.WXX and Bck/Bredolab.AE, along with dozens of cookies that I will get rid of last - surprised to see those, I'm forever manually denying cookies, as many as around 20 at a time.

- In the middle of researching what to do, both browsers disappeared, would not re-launch from the toolbar icons. (default Firefox 3.6.16 and Internet Explorer 8 - used when google analytics prevents Firefox pages from loading).

Clicking both task bar icon brings up the "Open With" screen, so, couldn't open them. Went to a known good and safe link in an email, which brought Firefox back up. In Windows explorer, went to iexplore.exe, right-click, "run as administrator", flash then gone, right-click then "start", same thing, right-click then "Open", got "open with". Still haven't gotten IE re-started.

- While working on getting the browsers back, Windows Explorer disappeared. Clicking the task bar icon brought up "open with". Went to Task Launcher, explorer.exe was still listed in "Processes", double-clicked and got it back.

- During the same time frame, Windows Security Center service stopped (red x near clock), with error msg "The Windows Security Center service can't be started". Went to Run > services.msc, Security Center is not in the list.

Now, most every program I try to open is pulling up "open with", just tried opening Avast (wanted to review the log) and MS Paint (wanted to get screen shots), my password keeper, whisper.exe, error msg "application not found", but the data file is still in its separate folder, don't yet know how many more are gone.

Noticed in the DDS log that Yontoo was just installed yesterday also, at the same time as the Avast alerts began. It has never been deliberately downloaded/installed, and there was never any hint that it was taking place - I'd like to get rid of that too.

My apologies if this is too much info, just not sure what may or may not be important.

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

DeFogger:

  • Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger may ask you to reboot the machine, if it does - click OK
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Download DDS:

  • Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

Thank you Gringo!

The day after my original post, 7/29, things progressively got worse. Late in the day, "Security Central" scareware suddenly appeared and crippled all applications, task manager, etc. and I could no longer get online. I don't have another computer, also couldn't find one to borrow, ended up taking it to a local computer shop. Picked up the next day, 7/30 - assured me everything was cleaned out.

The following day, Sunday 7/31, I ran a Panda online scan. During that scan, Microsoft Security Essentials alerted -

7/31 - MSE - 2 threats Detected & Removed -
TrojanDownloader:Win32/Tracur.y - Active - file: C:\Windows.old\Windows\Temp\tmph4407026403140719092.tmp
Rogue:Win32/FakeRean - Active - file: C:\Windows.old\Windows\SysWOW64\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\naf.exe
(note: Panda identified both as Trj/CI.A, in same locations)

Ran MSE yesterday, 8/3 -

1 threat Detected & Removed -
Rogue:Win32/FakeRean - Active
containerfile: C:\Windows.old\ProgramData\defender.exe
containerfile: C:\Windows.old\Windows\Temp\D0B9.tmp
file: C:\Windows.old\ProgramData\defender.exe->(UPX)
file: C:\Windows.old\Users\Public\Desktop\Security Protection.lnk
file: C:\Windows.old\Windows\Temp\D0B9.tmp->(UPX)

I've taken no further scans or actions.

Also, I've attempted upgrading Microsoft Security Essentials 3 or 4 times, all failing - error code 0x80070643. The GUI indicates definitions are updating correctly.

As per your instructions -
Will not run any other tool ( or make any changes) until instructed
Ran DeFogger > disable (won't re-enable until you instruct)

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Hi Gringo,

Still the same problems with Microsoft Security Essentials, and I've just realized I hadn't mentioned a problem with sp1 update before (oops!),
but still the same with that also. From what I've read, it's a common problem with the combination of these two.

Other than that, there's no sign or symptoms of the trojan/virus/scareware behavior.

MICROSOFT SECURITY ESSENTIALS -

After completing ComboFix, MSSE still complains about upgrading.
notification-area alert pops up - "An upgrade is available. Click here to upgrade"
Clicked, then got error - "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion."

Restarted computer -
(fyi - was first restart after running ComboFix, a couple things I had previously added to the start menu disappeared - "Run" command & "Recent Items")

MSSE alerted again -
Clicked to upgrade, failed with same error code as before -
"0x80070643 - Microsoft Security Essentials cannot be installed on a computer that is running other security programs.
Sometimes, even if you remove other security programs, they do not completely uninstall."

I had been using Avast, but when I got the computer back from the shop, every one of my installed programs were gone.
Only the basic programs built into the OS remained. The only "other security programs" are mbam, and some of the Avast files
are in one of the two cloned file sets the computer guy created. He, in turn, installed MSSE instead. I'm beginning to think MSSE
is more trouble than it's worth.

WINDOWS UPDATE -

Tried a microsoft instruction - "Ensure that the Windows Installer service is running" - didn't help...

(small message window)
"Service pack installation can't continue
Software installed on this computer isn't compatible with the service pack.
Click the link for more information about this problem.
After the problem is resolved, restart the installation."

"Microsoft Security Essentials - your version of this program may prevent successful installation of this service pack."

The referenced link is -

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/why-am-i-receiving-a-message-about-microsoft-security-essentials-or-microsoft-forefront-client-security-when-installing-a-service-pack
[snip] "To avoid this issue, install the latest updates to Microsoft Security Essentials"

Closed the message window, then -

"Failed: 1 update - Windows Update encountered an unknown error - code 800F0A09"

With a link to -

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957307
"This issue occurs if a Windows Update client or a Microsoft Update client cannot access the user token.
To resolve this issue, stop and then restart the Windows Update Service."

Didn't help - same error 800F0A09
..."Software installed on this computer isn't compatible with the service pack."...

I had already tested an sp1 update a couple days after I got the computer back (before my 2nd DDS logs), and it failed -
(I wouldn't have actually installed it until completing your instructions, since sp's often create their own additional problems).
But I have installed small security updates, to test for problems with other types of updates - and they installed in snap -
some before my 2nd DDS logs, and today, 6 for MS Office and 1 for PowerPoint Viewer
(Hope I haven't stepped too far out of line with those, since I should wait on your ok) :::in the time-out chair facing the corner!:::

Oh Wow Gringo! I wasn't expecting additional help with issues outside of the cleaning process! I really do appreciate it! At the time that I posted the details of the remaining 2 problems, I was thinking it would be best for you to look them over in case there was anything related to the infections. So thank you very much for saving me from lots of study time in figuring out how to fix them!

I ran MS Fix it, uninstalled MSSE and installed the latest version, ran Windows Update to attempt the sp1 install again, and presto! Worked like a charm!

normaly when you take a computer to a shop they don't clean it they just reinstall the os so you lose anything that was on there

Yes, I was aware of that, but he assured me he wouldn't, and would call first if he thought it necessary after all. When he had it ready to go, said he replaced everything with a cleaned-up clone, and "to my eye", nothing would look different. Pffft!!!

So thank you again for all your kind and generous help Gringo!

Clear your Java Cache

  • click on Start-> Control Panel (Classic View)-> Java (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      Applications and Applets
      Trace and Log Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.
Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware :

  • I would like you to rerun MBAM
  • Double-click mbam icon
  • go to the update tab at the top
  • click on check for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
  • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Download HijackThis

  • Go Here to download HijackThis Installer
  • Save HijackThis Installer to your desktop.
  • Double-click on the HijackThis Installer icon on your desktop. (Vista and Win 7 right click and run as admin)
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on Edit > Select All then click on Edit > Copy to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT use the AnalyseThis button its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • Log From MBAM
  • report from Hijackthis
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Hi Gringo,

Still no noticeble computer problems, other than the missing "run as admin" option for HijackThis

- Cleared Java Cache - went smoothly
- Ran TFC - went smoothly
- Updated and ran MBAM quick scan - no "Show Results" option/nothing to "Check (tick)" - went smoothly

HijackThis -
- saved HijackThis to desktop
- right-clicked Installer -- no "run as admin" option (very unusual)
--- double-clicked to install
--- default install to C:\Program Files(x86)\Trend Micro\HijackThis [note: all other programs I've ever installed default to this]
- did not launch automatically
- right-clicked desktop HijackThis icon - no "run as admin"
- double-clicked to open, selected "Do a system scan and save a logfile button"
- message re: can't access hosts file - must do manually, with instructions
- clicked "ok" and scan started automatically
- notepad opened, and message screen "create new log?", no, closed program
- right-clicked HijackThis icon > properties > compatibility - privilege level: run as admin
- double-clicked HijackThis icon to launch - continued with your original instructions - went smoothly

Greetings

These logs are looking very good, we are almost done!!! Just one more scan to go.

:Remove unneeded startup entries:

This part of the fix is purely optional
These are programs that start up when you turn on your computer but don't need to be, any of these programs you can click on their icons (or start from the control panel) and start the program when you need it. By stopping these programs you will boot up faster and your computer will work faster.

  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Posted Image
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • report from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now after running the script?

Well, some problems after running ComboFix / CFScript.txt log, but still no noticeable infection-type issues.

- 2 items on start menu disappeared again - "Run" command & "Recent Items"
- nothing will open without "run as admin" again... click anything, get these 2 message boxes, with only the program name in the title bar
"Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion."
click ok, then get this -
"The item you selected is unavailable. It might have been moved, renamed, or removed. Do you want to remove it from the list?" Yes or No

haven't answered - not exactly sure what list(?) presume it's the "moved, renamed, or removed" list(?)

I've tried these, so far …

Firefox
Internet Explorer
Thunderbird
Windows Explorer
Notepad (twice – had to "run as admin" both times)
OpenOffice writer

I hope it's not too late to mention that several items in the Eset/CFScript are legit -

These are ok -

C:\Downlods\CD Helpful ... - [computer guy's large collection of tools, from last year]
C:\Gateway ... - [my Gateway/XP died last year, he copied files to this computer]
C:\Users ...
C:\Windows.old\Documents and Settings\Lynn\Documents (and My Documents) ... - [computer guy copy from last weekend]
C:\Windows.old.000\Documents and Settings ... - [computer guy copy from last weekend]
C:\Windows.old.000\Program Files (x86)\Dell ...
C:\Windows.old.000\Users ...

These are not ok -

C:\Windows.old\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Tarma Installer\{889DF117-14D1-44EE-9F31-C5FB5D47F68B}\_Setupx.dll
C:\Windows.old\Documents and Settings\All Users\Tarma Installer\{889DF117-14D1-44EE-9F31-C5FB5D47F68B}\_Setupx.dll
C:\Windows.old\Documents and Settings\Lynn\AppData\Local\Application Data\Temp\CAB9.tmp
C:\Windows.old\Documents and Settings\Lynn\AppData\Local\Temp\CAB9.tmp
C:\Windows.old\Documents and Settings\Lynn\Local Settings\Temp\CAB9.tmp
C:\Windows.old\ProgramData\Tarma Installer\{889DF117-14D1-44EE-9F31-C5FB5D47F68B}\_Setupx.dll
C:\Windows.old\Users\All Users\Application Data\Tarma Installer\{889DF117-14D1-44EE-9F31-C5FB5D47F68B}\_Setupx.dll

Hello

Restart the computer and it will fix the "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion."
problems. (see earlier posts of mine about combofix)

the things I listed in the CF script either have adware aplications with them or are old tools that should not be used any more as they are outdated

after you rstart the computer let me know how things are
