I was recently attacked by a Trojan virus known as the XP Anti-Virus 2012. I went to bleepingcomputer.com and followed the instructions to remove the virus. As far as I can tell I followed all of the instructions properly, including downloading and installing a program called "FixNCR.reg" and then another called "rkill" and finally I installed and ran Malwarebytes. The virus was apparently successfully removed. I did all of this in Safe Mode and logged in as an Administrator before carrying out these instructions. When I rebooted my PC after removing the files, I can no longer open any applications. When I try, I get a window that tells me to choose the program that I want to use to open the file.

Hello.

Please download fixexe.reg by Grinler to your Desktop. This utility will reverse changes to your system made by the infection.

Once downloaded, please execute the utility by double clicking on it. Windows will ask you if you wish to merge information with the Registry. You should allow it to do so.

Let me know how things work after that.

Thanks for the reply, but it didn't work. I downloaded fixexe.reg as indicated allowed it to merge etc. and I still get the same messages when I try to open an application. Any other ideas? What about reinstalling Windows XP (If I can find the disc) as a repair?

Hello.

Let's try this.

Please download ExeFix.scr by Farbar and save it to a flashdrive or on the root of the system drive (usually C:).
  • Important: Boot your computer into the account that has trouble running exe files.
  • Run the tool.
  • The tool notifies you within a fraction of a second to reboot the computer, please do so.
  • Please tell me if you are now able to run programs.
Note: If the tool did not run you may change the extension to .com or .bat or .cmd or .pif
Also note that in order the fix to work you need to be booted to the user account that has trouble running exe files.

That seems to have taken care of the problem. Thanks very much for your help.
