A couple of days ago, SEP 11 identified a generic trojan involving a service called seclogon32 and a DLL at c:\windows\system32\LegitCheckControl32.dll. After a couple of reboots, it claimed to have quarantined the infected files. However, around the same time I started seeing occasional hijacking of links in Google search results that would take me to sites like find-answers.com. Full SEP and MBAM scans turned up nothing. I tried a system restore to a point several weeks ago, long before the behavior which I believe may have introduced the malware to my system; the system restore was successful, but the occasional redirects persisted. One thing I noticed was that the redirects seem to happen infrequently, and not always consistently for a set of search terms. For example, I could search on terms related to malware removal and click on the first several links with no problem, then search again with the same terms and the links would be hijacked.

I had some trouble getting GMER to run. The first time, it locked up my computer partway through. The second time, it did identify a "hidden" entry (in a folder which didn't actually exist) and then blusecreened with an "IRQL not less than or equal to" error before it completed. The third time, it completed, but when it was done, I started getting a series of error messages that read "Windows was unable to save all the data for the file \Device\HarddiskVolume1\$Mft. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere." and so on with other folder names, including Windows, Windows\inf, and IE8. When I tried to open the saved GMER log, I got an error message indicating insufficient resources. I rebooted, and Windows ran chkdsk before booting up; everything now seems fine. I had not been having any problems at all with this machine before the trojan a couple of days ago.

Thanks for your help.

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

DeFogger:

  • Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger may ask you to reboot the machine, if it does - click OK
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Download DDS:

  • Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

    • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal.
    • Shortly after two logs will appear:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
  • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
  • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply

Hi Gringo,

Thanks for the reply. I've actually punted on this -- after running several antimalware and anti-rootkit programs and finding nothing, and yet still seeing the redirect symptoms, I deleted all partitions from my HD, created a new one and ran a low-level NTFS format, flashed my BIOS, and reinstalled Windows. I was worried that the rootkit was still hiding in BIOS, or (as I've seen reported elsewhere) in video or network BIOS, but so far I've seen no symptoms. Fingers crossed!

So this particular case can be closed. Thanks for all you folks do here.

Bob.
