Hacked contacts in email

My OS is Windows 7 , my E-mail is msn.com Microsoft Windows Live Hot Mail.
Someone has hacked my email twice and sent spam to some of my contacts pretending to be me with my email address.
So the questions are, how did they do it and how do I stop them?

There are numerous ways people can get passwords to email accounts, i.e phising, packet sniffing, etc.. Best thing to do at tis point is change your password and security questions.
