hello all
Im new to this forum
Lately i've been getting a very weird behaviour from my usually swift pc.
windows file explorer is running terribly slow, and internet is even worse.
everything was ok, and suddenly it happened.
another weird thing- the pc shut itself down without asking (it wasn't the battery or electricity- it was plugged in)
this also never happens.

I've been trying to find what the problem is with no success. I suspect to be infected with something.

When I run pc on safe mode everything again seems pretty normal.

hmpf

Please- can someone help me? I'll be very greatful.

I'm running vista, browsing with firefox 6 , run nod32, prevx, malwarebites, adawatch, and seem to have enough disc space.

as we speak, Im running trojanhunter, and it found 1 infection so far- Freerip3/toolband.dll (adware.fastlook)

thanks

Welcome aboard Posted Image

Download Security Check from HERE, and save it to your Desktop.

* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

=============================================================================

Please download MiniToolBox and run it.

Checkmark following boxes:
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
Click Go and post the result.

=============================================================================

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/ to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Be sure to restart the computer.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

=============================================================================

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.

IMPORTANT! If for some reason GMER refuses to run, try again.
If it still fails, try to UN-check "Devices" in right pane.
If still no joy, try to run it from Safe Mode.

Also, you're running two AV programs:
ESET NOD32 Antivirus
Prevx

One of them has to go.
I suggest PrevX goes.

Again, thank you for your help and support!

Here Gmer Log file

I've had troubles running it as you said, took me quite a few reboots to get it done
Also, I started scan accidentaly when prevx was still on, but a few moments later turned it off. As for NOD32- call me silly, I lost my password and can't disable it without it. i tried running on safe mode , but for some reason i only managed to finally run it on the regular startup. So it was on all along the scan.

Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check Drivers, Stealth, and uncheck the rest.
  • Click OK.
  • Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the report into your next reply.
-- Note: You may get this warning...just ignore it, click OK and continue: "Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself! It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?".

do you advise me to keep running mbam, adwatch, and trojanhunter altogether as real-time scanners and protection?

No. You should be running only one antimalware program in real time.
I suggest you stick with MBAM.

Download TDSSKiller and save it to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory (usually C:\ folder) in the form of TDSSKiller_xxxx_log.txt. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Download BlueScreenView (in Zip file)
No installation required.
Unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go Edit>Select All.
Go File>Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

hi, thanks for your persistence
things only got worse than the last time
my computer now works like a 386 pc
it takes hours to run even the simplest task
a few programs crashed while loading- mbam, siw , trojan hunter and gave me an error report
a few times i tried to ctrl-alt-dlt to run task manager and see what'sgoing on, but that crashed too! i had to reboot manually.

bluescreen did not list anything, so i have nothing to report here. does this make any sence to you?

siw's report goes like this:

Sensor Value Min Max
GLORIAA-PC
TOSHIBA Portable PC
Temperatures
THRM 0 C (32 F) 0 C (32 F) 0 C (32 F)
Intel Pentium
Temperatures
Core #0 96 C (204 F) 93 C (199 F) 100 C (211 F)
Core #1 95 C (202 F) 93 C (199 F) 98 C (208 F)
TOSHIBA MK3252GSX
Temperatures
Assembly 44 C (111 F) 42 C (107 F) 44 C (111 F)
Battery
Voltages
Current Voltage 12.34 V 12.34 V 12.34 V
Capacities
Designed Capacity 49344 mWh 49344 mWh 49344 mWh
Full Charge Capacity 3220 mWh 3220 mWh 3220 mWh
Current Capacity 3232 mWh 3232 mWh 3232 mWh
Levels
Wear Level 94 % 94 % 94 %
Charge Level 100 % 100 % 100 %

btw: I don't know if it tells you anything- took the liberty to run cpu & mem usage report on siw, and it started at 100% cpu usage for quite some time, while i just loaded this page. the same happens when I open a file explorer window and browse my computer. then after some time (sometimes a long time) it goes down again to 50 or to 1%. is this normal?!

You're greatly overheating!!

Core #0 96 C (204 F) 93 C (199 F) 100 C (211 F)
Core #1 95 C (202 F) 93 C (199 F) 98 C (208 F)

Which type of Pentium processor is it?

You shouldn't be running the laptop in this condition as you may be causing irreversible CPU damage.

With the laptop off, get a can of compressed air and clean well all vents.
If the above didn't help you may need to get a cooling pad.

Post new SIW report.
