Hi All,

This is my friends PC that I'm trying to fix. It hangs at the welcome screen, 9/10 time and nothing happens for 10-15 mins. The HDD light doesn't flash so i restart it with the power button. I have run a AVG recovery Disk which didn't find anything, i've run Eset on-line scanner which didn't find anything. I've run Memtest for 2hours it reached 175% (it only has 1Gig installed) and it didn't find any faults.

The only problem I've found is that the hard disk had 20% fragmentation. After repeated defragging with Piriform's Defraggler in safe mode it is now down to 4%. It did have 7,400 emails in the inbox which have now been sorted, most have been deleted. Using Msconfig, i have disabled all start-up item except AVG Free 2011 on one of the few times i've been able to get it to boot up normally.

When it has booted normally it seems to run fine, but then when i restart it it will hang at the Welcome screen, I have then tried Last known good configeration, but it doesn't do anything.

I'm stuck now and don't know what to try next. It does have recovery console installed but i don't really know what commands would help with it.

If anyone could help I'd be really grateful

Are you saying that a selective startup booted normally but as soon as you went back to a normal boot it did not? If that's the case, do this:

Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three items) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming procedure, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem.
After you've isolated the cause, do not use msconfig to permanently disable the process. Instead, if it is a service go to START - RUN and type: services.msc (then press enter) and disable the service OR, if it a program, you can download & run a simple app such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) to enable, disable, or otherwise manage startup programs.

Hi thanks for the quick reply, when i have used selective startup, it will start occasionally normally after being turned off for a number of hours. It will then run fine until i do a restart then it will hang at the welcome screen. It is always in selective startup mode. I forgot to mention and was about to edit my post that when i try to get onto windows update, it says the page is unavailable.

If you are going to be around for a bit i will go and try to start up the poorly PC
Thanks

If you can try and run this:

Please perform the following, so that we can get the exact specs of your computer. This will better assist us in helping you more.

Publish a Snapshot using Speccy

The below is for those who cannot get online

Please take caution when attaching a text file to your post if you cannot copy/paste the link to your post, you will need to edit it to make sure that your Windows Key is not present.

If you cannot get it installed can you identify the hard drive from the BIOS, I am thinking that the drive is close to or in the process of failing.

I've started it up and it started 1st time, nice and quickly. Using Msconfig, In selective startup their are 4 items listed below. The first 3 are selected

1, avgtray c:\PROGRAM FILES\avg\avg10\Avgtray.exe
2, jusched C:\program Files\Commman files\java\java Update\jusched.exe
3, ctfmon C:\windows\system32\ctfmon.exe
4, TINTSETP C:\windows\system32\IME\TINTLGNT\TINTSETP.EXE /SYNC

I have also previously run chkdsk /r with no faults found, if this helps

The hard drive is not being detected, can you go to Device Manager via right clicking on My Computer then going to Properties then to the Hardware Tab. Under Device Manager expand the Hard Drives section and tell us whats listed.

Very strange, their is no Hard disk tab to expand in device manager, only IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, which lists 2primary ide channel, 2 secondary channel, an Sis PCI IDE controller & Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE controller
