Hello.

Trying to resolve an issue with a friend's laptop, which is a Compaq Presario 2100 with XP Home Edition loaded on it.

Upon booting up, the splash screen come up, and then when I select the only profile there (no password required)it tells me that it's loading my personal settings, and then flickers for a brief moment and then says it is logging off.

I tried some of the tried and true resolves: F8 during boot sequence and tried Safe Mode and also Safe Mode w/Networking, both of which resulted in a quick flash of what appears to be the dreaded BSOD, although it flashes too quick for me to read any of the displayed information.

Last Known Good Config option simply loads the OS, gets me back to the Welcome screen and then I select the only profile and, yes, we're back at the beginning.

I tried searching for a post here in the XP Forum with a similar issue but alas, I thought it best to start a new topic.

Not sure what other information anyone might need but please let me know if there is something I can include and thanks for any/all advice and/or direction.

Not that I'm aware, although I'm checking again with my friend to be sure.

The other option I've tried was an XPRC.iso CD, but I'm getting prompted with a request for an Admin password and my friend indicated that she never put one on there. I believe her, as she doesn't like to make her computer 'complicated' and so doesn't put PW on anything she doesn't have to, or worse, makes them akin to every IT person's nightmare (password/letmein/6 taps of the spacebar).

Next step: Avira's Rescue System Disk, see how that plays out.

Been stumbling around the internet and keep getting pointed to some type of possible issue with a usernit file, although I'm not familiar with that, while some other posts - on other boards - suggest editing the registry to resolve, something I'm sure I don't want to mess with.

Well, off I go.

Wish me luck and thanks for the reply.

1) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

2) F8 at boot and on the advanced boot options screen choose: Disable restart on system failure. Hopefully next time the blue screen message will remain up and you can post the ENTIRE contents here.

Hi, :welcome:

Lets give it a try.

We will need to view the system status from an external environment. You will need a USB drive and a CD to burn. There will be several steps to follow.

Download GETxPUD.exe to the desktop of your clean computer
  • Run GETxPUD.exe
  • A new folder will appear on the desktop.
  • Open the GETxPUD folder and click on the get&burn.bat
  • The program will download xpud_0.9.2.iso, and upon finished will open BurnCDCC ready to burn the image.
  • Click on Start and follow the prompts to burn the image to a CD.
  • Next download driver.sh to your USB drive
  • Also Download Query.exe to the USB drive. In your working computer, navigate to the USB drive and click on the Query.exe. A folder and a file, query.sh, will be extracted.
  • Remove the USB & CD and insert them in the sick computer
  • Boot the Sick computer with the CD you just burned
  • The computer must be set to boot from the CD
  • In some computers you need to tap F12 and choose to boot from the CD, in others is the Esc key. Please consult your computer's documentation.
  • Follow the prompts
  • A Welcome to xPUD screen will appear
  • Press File
  • Expand mnt
  • sda1,2...usually corresponds to your HDD
  • sdb1 is likely your USB
  • Click on the folder that represents your USB drive (sdb1 ?)
  • Confirm that you see driver.sh that you downloaded there
  • Press Tool at the top
  • Choose Open Terminal
  • Type bash driver.sh
  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a report will be located on your USB drive named report.txt
  • Then type bash driver.sh -af
  • Press Enter
  • You will be prompted to input a filename.
  • Type the following:

    Winlogon.exe

  • Press Enter
  • If successful, the script will search for this file.
  • After it has completed the search enter the next file to be searched
  • Type the following:

    volsnap.sys

  • Press Enter
  • If successful, the script will search for this file.
  • After it has completed the search enter the next file to be searched
  • Type the following:

    explorer.exe

  • Press Enter
  • After it has completed the search enter the next file to be searched
  • Type the following:

    Userinit.exe

  • Press Enter
  • After the search is completed type Exit and press Enter.
  • After it has finished a report will be located in the USB drive as filefind.txt
  • While still in the Open Terminal, type bash query.sh
  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a report will be located in the USB drive as RegReport.txt
  • Then type dd if=/dev/sda of=mbr.bin bs=512 count=1

Leave a space among the following Statements:

dd is the executable application used to create the backup
if=/dev/sda is the device the backup is created from - the hard drive when only one HDD exists
of=mbr.bin is the backup file to create - note the lack of a path - it will be created in the directory currently open in the Terminal
bs=512 is the number of bytes in the backup
count=1 says to backup just 1 sector

It is extremely important that the if and of statements are correctly entered.

  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a report will be located in the USB drive as mbr.bin
  • Plug the USB back into the clean computer, zip the mbr.bin, and except for the mbr.bin zipped file, post the contents of the report.txt, filefind.txt and RegReport.txt in your next reply. The mbr.bin zipped file must be attached to your reply.

No request for help throughout private messaging will be attended.

Hmm, tried everything to the letter - I think - but once my USB was back on my clean computer, only the Report.txt and the filefind.txt files were on my stick.
I'm going to post these here, per your instructions, and then attempt the process one more time and then call it a night, but I'll be up early (EST) and check in before I head off to work.

Thank you so much for trying to help me with this.

Onward,

Winterland

Okay, went back and tackled it again, reading (and typing carefully) esp. the part where you wrote "it is extremely important that the if and of statements are correctly entered".

:P

Have also attempted to attach the requested mbr.bin file zipped.

The userinit.exe is missing in the sda1/WINDOWS/system32 folder.

Follow these steps:

Boot to xPUD and expand mnt.

Browse to the following folder:

sda1/WINDOWS/ServicePackFiles/i386

Locate the userinit.exe file. Right click on it and select Copy. Then browse to the following folder:

sda1/WINDOWS/system32

Right click on an empty space on this folder and select Paste. That should copy the userinit.exe file to its proper location.

If successful, restart the computer in Normal Mode and let me know the outcome.

I am (almost) speechless.

I confess, when I saw your initial set of instructions, I thought, 'oh boy, probably not going to be able to pull this off, time to go back to being a tourist at this place.'

But, following your instructions to the T, I am in.

Success! :thumbup2:

I love this place and now I love it even more.

Thank you so much for your quick response and help/direction.

So far, so good.

My friend's son, who has been using the laptop, was using/running multiple AV/malware removal apps and, ugh, Limewire.

I'm tweaking / deleting (esp the Limewire) and updating the basics and will give it back, but thus far, with several reboots, everything seems fine.

Am going with some basic protection: Malwarebytes, Avast and going to use SuperAntiSpyware as a stand alone scanner and see what I find.

Any other thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated, but if not, you've already helped so much, I understand.

Thanks again for the quick response, the great tools and directions.
