My dream build was an 17 950 on an X58 MB until I came across this i5 2500k. Cheaper than the i7 and further up the list.
Any comments ??

It's a fine gaming processor and it can overclock very well if done properly.

I would go for the i7 2600k over the 2500k due to the increase in stock, though both do well. Of course, synthetic benchmarks are mostly junk IMO since they don't measure real world performance.

You can't really see the difference between synthetic benchmark and real world performance if the results are marginal from each other. The 2600K doesn't make a big differencein gaming performance.

OK. I was thinking of an Asus P8P67 Rev 3 MB but there are a number of variants. Came across an AsRock Z68 Pro G3 which seems to run quite a bit faster at not much difference in price.
As you can see, I am stumbling my way through this so comments would be appreciated.
Cheers

I would get the AsRock motherboard mainly because of the positive reviews and Asus's motherboard are finicky.

Have you considered a Coolermaster Hyper 212+? I am using one myself with a push and pull setup(2 fans) and my Phenom 1090T overclocked to 3.8GHz only idles at 18C and load is 40C.

TY. I guessed that, but some sites specify the LGA type and others just say suitable for i3 i5 and i7

I think the information on the Coolermaster site, shows all of the compatiable sockets and to let you know, a AM3+ socket is also compatiable.

Looks a very effective cooler but don't know if I would be happy having all that weight hanging 5" out of the MB. Looking at a more conventional Zalman CPNS 8700 LED. Am not looking to OC so this should be effective enough.
