Please perform the following, so that we can get the exact specs of your computer. This will better assist us in helping you more.

Publish a Snapshot using Speccy

The below is for those who cannot get online

Please take caution when attaching a text file to your post if you cannot copy/paste the link to your post, you will need to edit it to make sure that your Windows Key is not present.

You can slim down the number of programs running by going to Add/Remove Programs and removing the programs that you don't use. I don't recommend uninstalling software that says ".NET", "Microsoft" or any other brands associated with your computer, but things like video games and instant messengers are easy examples of things you can remove.

Also, you can check out the list of things that run on startup by pulling up your start menu and typing in: "msconfig.exe" no quotes, and pressing enter. Once msconfig opens, go to the Startup tab and you'll see a checklist of programs that run when you log in. You may not be comfortable un-checking those boxes left and right, and that's understandable, but if the list is long you may need to trim it down. There are some that can obviously be turned off like "ItunesHelper.exe", things that you almost never use. Be wary of turning off programs that you don't recognize. They may be more important than you think.

If you need any advice on which programs to uncheck, well, that's what we're here for. :thumbup2: My startup checklist has 35 programs, but I only run about 10 of them. Your computer may have even more than 35, meaning you probably have some cleanup to do.

As a parting note, if there's anything you're uncomfortable uninstalling or unchecking, but you think it can probably be removed, ask about it here of course!

Uninstalling programs does not effect system performance.

Shawn - exactly what is slow? Please describe the problem(s) in detail. Thank you.

I'm sorry. I was trying to imply that he should uninstall programs that run in the background like AIM or multiple antivirus programs. I know I mentioned video games... I guess that's just a habit that I've developed. (And are you sure it doesn't improve performance? That snake oil salesman seemed pretty convinced... )

And I would say more on which programs to remove from Startup but I think we'll see that in short order when we get a Speccy, right?

Yes, I'm sure it does not improve performance. And you suggested the OP goes to Add / Remove - that is not stopping programs from running in the background - that's uninstalling. And no, we don't need a Speccy report for startup apps. A simple app such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel is more than enough to manage startup apps. But let's not get off track here - let's see how the OP responds.

Yes we do need speccy's for every post it gives a better idea of what kind of computer we are dealing with. The speccy gives us more insite on the specs of the computer from processor, ram, what services are running, and other vital information. So yes Speccy's are required when people complain of slow computers. They could have 4 active anti-virus programs actively running, and nothing else we ask could show that but speccy via the listings of Speccy's output of Started and Stopped Service. It slso gives information such as Hard Drive type so we can go look at the specs to see the speed settings such as PIO and DMA Settings.

So please provide a link to your speccy.

Have you always ran Norton, and if so was it slow in the past?

Please do the following:

Download Autoruns for Windows: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinte...s/bb963902.aspx

No installation required.

Simply unzip Autoruns.zip file, and double click on autoruns.exe file to run the program.

Go File>Save, and save it as AutoRuns.txt file to know location.

You must select Text from drop-down menu as a file type:

Attach the file to your next reply.
