Hello

I am trying to set up my home network and I am having trouble connecting two and three devices at the same time. I can connect to each one individually, but when I try to use them simultaneously (ex: xbox and two computers) on the internet, not every one can get internet access. Is there a way to set my hardware up to handle multiple devices at once?

Here is some information about my home network:

Internet type: Cable
Modem: Webstar DPX2203C
Ethernet switch: Linksys 10/100 5-port Workgroup Switch (model EZXS55W)
Home Network Mapping: Cable -> Modem -> Ethernet switch ---> Computer, Laptop, xbox360 (all wired connection from ethernet switch)

Here is the results report from minitoolbox:

Thank you for reading the directions it makes my job much easier :thumbup2:

Your ISP assigns you one IP address which the computer needs to communicate on the internet. When you have multiple computers with the same IP address trying to access the internet at the same time the information gets confused and you have an IP conflict. You either need to set up one computer with internet connection sharing or purchase a router. A Router will be assigned an IP address from your ISP then it will Assign IP addresses to the computers on the network. Each computer will have an IP address and a MAC address associated with it. The router will then use the MAC address to route the information to the proper PC/Xbox using NAT.

Enabling ICS (internet connection sharing)

To enable ICS, on your host computer:

  • Open Network Connections by clicking the Start button Posted Image, clicking Control Panel, clicking Network and Internet, clicking Network and Sharing Center, and then clicking Manage network connections.
  • Right-click the connection that you want to share, and then click Properties. Posted Image If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  • Click the Sharing tab, and then select the Allow other network users to connect through this computerís Internet connection check box.

    Posted Image
    Note
The Sharing tab will not be available if you have only one network connection.
  • If desired, you can also select the Allow other network users to control or disable the shared Internet connection check box.
  • Optionally, to allow other network users to use services running on your network, click Settings and select the services you want to allow.
When you enable ICS, your local area network (LAN) connection gets a new static IP address and configuration, so you'll need to reestablish any TCP/IP connections between your host computer and the other network computers.

To test your network and Internet connection, see if you can share files between computers and make sure each computer can reach a website.
