Hi, recently i was watching a movie on my laptop (off my portable hard drive) and it just turned off all of a sudden, thinking it maybe overheated or something i checked the battery and fan but i had the laptop popped up so the airflow wasn't a problem and nothing was unusually warm. Upon rebooting the computer i found that it would not boot properly and instead would take me to the startup recovery menu and run the startup recovery to try and fix the problem, however this didn't work and the details from the attempt indicate that it was caused by a corrupt file. I tried running several system restores from the startup recovery menu however that didn't work either and rebooting would take me back to this menu. I tried rebooting the laptop in safe mode and in the last know good configuration but neither worked. I had some files on there that i desperately needed that i hadn't recently backed up so i ran Ubuntu Isolinux OS from an installation CD and installed it back to back with windows and tried to recover my files, fortunatelly i was able to retrieve my files however when i tried to back them up onto the portable hard drive (which i was watching the movie from at the time of the crash) they wouldn't store on the hard drive.
After installing ubuntu i was able to boot windows in the last known good configuration, however it still wont boot normally as it just takes me back to startup recovery. However i have now found that my portable hard drive now wont even show up or be recognized when connected to a computer, even when connected to a computer that wasn't affected. I dont know if there is something that can be done to fix this because all my files are backed up on this hard drive, but that doesnt matter so much because i will propbably have to get someone to have a look at it to see whats happened.. however i would like some help to clear the laptop of whatever corrupt file has infected the computer so then i can at least backup my stuff again on another hard drive.
I have ran scans with Avira AntiVir and they have found some malware, which were;
TR/VB.Downloader.Gen [trojan]
TR/Crypt.XPACK.Gen3 [trojan]
and i ran Mbam and these were the infected files it found.
Files Infected:
c:\Users\Teearn\AppData\Local\Temp\F9F6.tmp (Trojan.Agent) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
c:\Windows\Temp\88c7cd9.exe (Trojan.FakeMS) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
c:\Users\Teearn\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\shed\thr1.chm (Malware.Trace) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

It also seems to have an effect on my internet browser address bar, where the icon for the address i.e. www.google.com will show the icon for adobe acrobat reader, other than that i cant really find anything else it is affecting

It would be greatly appreciated if i could get some help to find what the problem is
Thanks.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.
If you are unable to create a log because your computer cannot start up successfully please provide detailed information about the Windows version you are using: What we in particular need to know is version, edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system. [/b]
If you are unsure about any of these caracteristics, just let us know and we'll help you figuring it out. Please also tell us if you have your Windows CD/DVD handy.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • In the custom scan box paste the following:
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    explorer.exe
    winlogon.exe
    wininit.exe
    hlp.dat
    /md5stop
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Watch Topic.I suggest you click it and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Hi,

are you still unable to boot into normal mode or has that been fixed? I see some leftovers of the infection but no sign that it is currently still active.

When I reboot, windows won't start normally, instead when it's loading it flashes the blue screen for less than half a second and then reboots itself. However when I go into windows error recovery and select start windows normally, it manages to start perfectly fine?

Hi,

could you please let me know wats standing on the blue screen. For that you need to disable the automatic reboot:

When the PC starts booting hit F8 twice, and you will get into the advanced boot menu. THere select Disable automatic reboot on systematic failure.

The PC will reboot and stop at the blue screen, which you should then be able to read.

Hi,

thanks for letting me know. Someone else will likely pick up the topic then, as I will be gone the following week.

Hi The blue screen that I get gives the standad information saying a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down etc. check for viruses, remove any newly installed hard drive controllers. check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated, run CHLDSK for hard drive corruption, restart etc.

The Technical Information is

***STOP: 0x0000007B (0xFFFFF880009A98E8, 0xFFFFFFFFC000000D, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000)

Are you able to boot into safe mode with networking?

If so, please run the following:

Refer to the ComboFix User's Guide

  • Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

    Link 1
    Link 2

    * IMPORTANT !!! Place ComboFix.exe on your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with ComboFix.

You can get help on disabling your protection programs here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  • Ensure your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications are re-enabled.

Hi

Please run the following:

  • Please open your MalwareBytes AntiMalware Program
  • Click the Update Tab and search for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <-- very important
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.
