I have what I believe is a trojan cryptic.ctc on my computer that has been there for months. I've tried several different programs to remove it (AVG, SuperAntiSpyware, MalwareBytes, Spyware Doctor) and attempted manual removal to no avail. These programs generally require a reboot in order to remove the malware, and since my computer can't reboot properly I don't know if these programs would otherwise fix the problem or not. There are always at least 2 malware/trojans found when I run scans, depending on which program I'm using.

As I mentioned above, in order to add to the malware problem my computer will not shut down or restart properly. If I try to shut it down from the shutdown menu the screen will show "logging off" followed by a black screen, but it will not shut down completely unless I do it manually. If I attempt to restart from the shutdown menu, it will usually shut down properly, turn back on for a few seconds, and then spontaneously shut off again. Finally, the computer will occasionally go to blue-screen (the text on the blue screen is jumbled and I cannot read it) followed by shut-down when I'm in the middle of something. In all 3 cases, I need to wait about an hour before the computer will turn on again properly.

This computer is 5 years old so if it cannot be fixed I will simply deal with it until I can afford a new one. I've thought about doing a system restore but at this point I'm worried it will simply kill my computer entirely as opposed to fixing anything. The computer in question is a Gateway laptop running Vista.

Here is my DDS.txt log:

Re-Run aswMBR

  • Click Scan
  • On completion of the scan, click the FIX button,
  • There is a slight pause after clicking the 'Fix' button.
  • Wait for the tool to report 'Infection fixed successfully', now reboot the machine.
  • Rebooting the machine prematurely, before seeing this line will result in an incomplete fix.

Note:After the 'Infection fixed successfully' message appears, the machine may became unresponsive. You may have to do a hard boot of your machine. That may be a side effect from the fix. All will be well after the reboot.
  • Save the log as before and post in your next reply.

Let me know if the FIX button is not available

I did have to do a hard boot. This is the log after the re-start; I couldn't save the one immediately after the fix.

That looks fixed now.

Please run OTL so I can check the rest of the machine

  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply.

Let's complete the clear up using OTL. Open OTL again

Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

:OTL
IE - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings: "ProxyOverride" = <local>
FF - prefs.js..network.proxy.http: "127.0.0.1"
FF - prefs.js..network.proxy.http_port: 56323
O2 - BHO: (Yontoo Layers) - {FD72061E-9FDE-484D-A58A-0BAB4151CAD8} - File not found
O3 - HKLM\..\Toolbar: (DAEMON Tools Toolbar) - {32099AAC-C132-4136-9E9A-4E364A424E17} - File not found
@Alternate Data Stream - 500 bytes -> C:\ProgramData\Temp:05EE1EEF
@Alternate Data Stream - 125 bytes -> C:\ProgramData\Temp:DFC5A2B2
:reg
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\exefile\shell\open\command]
""=""%1" %*"

Then click the Run Fix button at the top

Let the program run unhindered.

When done it will say "Fix Complete press ok to open the log"
Please post that log in your next reply. Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTL\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Now scan online with ESET

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check Posted Image and check Remove found threats
  • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
    • Scan potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image
If no log is generated that means nothing was found. Please let me know if this happens.

Some files associated with Vundo. Not nice but without the .exe files just annoyances.

ESET has also removed the CrypticTrojanRemovalTool.exe which is the infection base.

The rootkit was certainly nasty but whatever you had installed appears to have done a reasonable job on the infections that arrivedf with it. How is the machine running now?

I haven't noticed any improvement in the running of the computer regarding speed etc., but it's not any worse than it was before either. I did get it to shut down properly for the first time in quite a while, but when I tried to do a re-start, it didn't work. I'm assuming this is more of a hardware issue than a virus/malware one?

Maybe, but Vundo is sneaky and may still be present.

Can you try and run Combofix. If you can't boot the machine let me know.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop making sure you rename it comfix.exe
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications including Firewalls, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Comfix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
