For the past two weeks, my wife's computer browser has been hijacked by Shopica. It occurred immediately after Microsoft performed a midnight auto software update on her computer. When she started her computer the next morning, none of her documents or program icons appeared. We called Microsoft directly and a technician asked us to download an .exe program called 'unhide' and immediately all her files and programs came back. Unfortunately, her browser started redirecting.

I have performed numerous malware scans and quaranteens and nothing has corrected the problem.

Any and all help would be appreciated. I will follow directions religiously. We do not want to have to purchase a new computer or hire an expensive technician to correct the problem.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

Please take note:

  • If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know.
  • If you are unable to create a log because your computer cannot start up successfully please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • If you are unable to perform the steps we have recommended please try one more time and if unsuccessful alert us of such and we will design an alternate means of obtaining the necessary information.
  • If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review your topic an do their best to resolve your issues.
  • If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
  • Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step. Then proceed to run aswMbr.exe as noted below.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

Note:
If you are unable to run a Gmer scan due the fact you are running a 64bit machine please run the following tool and post its log.

Please download aswMBR ( 511KB ) to your desktop.
  • Double click the aswMBR.exe icon to run it
  • Click the Scan button to start the scan
  • On completion of the scan, click the save log button, save it to your desktop and post it in your next reply.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

Hi Rireman4it,

Sorry about the delay, I did not even turn on my computer yesterday. Will perform and post the results of the tests today you recommended. On question from a security perspective. Is anything I post from the logs a security risk to information on my wife's computer?

Thank you for your assistance and I will run your recommendations today.

Pete

Hello,

Let's try a couple of powerful tools and see what they come up with.

1.
Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!
Be sure to download TDSSKiller.exe (v2.5.6.0) from Kaspersky's website and not TDSSKiller.zip which appears to be an older version 2.3.2.2 of the tool.
  • Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it.
  • To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to How to change the file extension.
  • Click the Start Scan button.
  • Do not use the computer during the scan
  • If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
  • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.
  • Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
  • A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. TDSSKiller.2.5.6.0_27.07.2010_09.o7.26_log.txt) will be created and saved to the root directory (usually Local Disk C:).
  • Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.

2.
Install Recovery Console and Run ComboFix

This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
  • Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Close any open windows, including this one.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.
  • Posted Image
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Note:The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you
should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

    Posted Image
  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you. Please post the contents of the log (C:\ComboFix.txt).
Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running.
ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.

Note: Please Do NOT mouseclick combofix's window while its running because it may cause it to stall.

Things to include in your next reply::
TDSSKiller log
Combofix.txt
How is our machine running now?

Firman4it,

Sorry, but absolutely no change in the hijack status. This is the strangest thing I have ever encountered. Nothing to date has found it or corrected it. As soon as I do a Yahoo or Google search and hit a site, it redirects to 'shipica', yellow pages, or some other useless site.

Any further ideas? I have already reset the ATT router thinking it might be in there.

Should I reload my Windows 7 and reload the programs? I do not want to have to buy a new computer because some criminal sent us a virus.

Your help is welcome

Pete

Hello,

We will try some other things. We have many other things to try. Don't worry.

1.
Does you computer connect to the internet through a router? If so we need o reset that router.
How to Reset Your Router

Re-Run aswMBR

  • Click Scan
  • On completion of the scan, click the FIXMBR button
  • There is a slight pause after clicking the 'Fix' button.
  • Wait for the tool to report 'Infection fixed successfully', now reboot the machine.
  • Rebooting the machine prematurely, before seeing this line will result in an incomplete fix.

Note:After the 'Infection fixed successfully' message appears, the machine may became unresponsive. You may have to do a hard boot of your machine. That may be a side effect from the fix. All will be well after the reboot.
  • Save the log as before and post in your next reply.

Things to include in your next reply::
AswMBR log
How is your machine running now?

Fireman4it,

I unfortunately could not wait any longer and called Microsoft Security directly. Spent three hours on the phone with them, went to a level 2 native American security specialist, and they did find a bootkick in the root and attempted to remove it. Unfortunately, in removing it, it did some damage to the root and the computer would not reboot despite everything that Microsoft tried.

They then attempted to reinstall Window's 7, even though I knew this would cause me to reinstall all software. We do have offsite backup. Unfortunately, we kept getting errors stating 'bootmgr could not be found'. Microsoft asked that I call Dell finally and I did this. After an hour of trying things with Dell, Dell decided to send out another harddrive since the machine is still under warranty. What a frustrating situation.

Thanks for your help and please close the case. You tried.

Pete

Hello,

Sorry to hear your troubles. The problem is when you fix or mess with the MBR (Master Boot Record) in a Dell it can cause your machine to become unbootable.

As this topic seems to be resolved I will now close it.
