In the lower right hand corner of my screen, (not in the task bar, but just above it) is a search bar. I cant close it. I cant do much of anything with it. The only commands that it lets you see are:" Clear History", "Task bar activate", and "hide search"....I also seem to be getting alot of "program not responding" messages...Also, when I use google, it throws a pop-up of whatever I search for over the google results. sorry for all the edits, I'm a novice. Hello,

It's better to print out the next instructions or save it in notepad, because you also have to work in safe mode without networking support, so this page wouldn't be available then.
It is also important you don't miss a step and perform everything in the right order!!

* Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.
This is an important step, because some files/folder won't be visible otherwise when you have to delete them.

* Reboot into Safe Mode`: ( without networking support !)
°To get into the Safe mode as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key". Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {1C78AB3F-A857-482e-80C0-3A1E5238A565} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: Norton AntiVirus - {42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6} - C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\NavShExt.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Desktop Search] C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\desktop.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ffis] C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\ffisearch.exe
O18 - Filter: text/html - {950238FB-C706-4791-8674-4D429F85897E} - (no file)

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

* Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them if still present:

C:\WINDOWS\isrvs <== folder
C:\WINDOWS\deskbar.ini
C:\WINDOWS\delprot.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\delprot.sys

* Go to start > run and type: sc delete delprot

* Reboot your system back to normal mode.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I'll take another look.

If you had any problems with deleting files or noticed any other problems during your fix, let me also know in your next reply.

Please reinstall your Norton again, because it looks like it got corrupted.

Hello,

Thanks for the information. I was looking around the net and came up with another "fix", and it seems to have worked. I rebooted in safe mode, and did a "regedit", found the files, and deleted them. The little bugger (search bar) hasnt been back since. Now, about my Norton being corrupted. If I just deleted it would that solve that problem? I never use it, so figured if I deleted it, no biggy. Also, how would that get corrupted in the first place? Just curious. Thanks again for the help. Its appreciated.

Hi,

Uuuumm.. as I read here in above post... you also have to delete the files I mentionned above, not only in regedit.
This is already what hijackthis does though, deleting those entries from the registry.
I still strongly advise to perform my above steps, because when you didn't perform all my steps, the toolbar will come back -- believe me.

Uummm....

Norton being corrupted. If I just deleted it would that solve that problem? I never use it, so figured if I deleted it, no biggy.

That explains why Norton was not present in the processes, because you disabled it.
Any reason why you don't use or disable it? Do you know what the purpose is of an antivirus? It PREVENTS infections.
So if you don't let it run in the background as how it is set as default, you would never be protected. So you'll get reinfected anyway.

Is your Norton antivirus still able to update? Or is the trial already expired in case it was a trial? If so, I suggest you uninstall Norton via software > add/remove and reinstall another antivirus and firewall.

AVG, AntiVirŪ OR Avast are good FREE antivirus.
Never install more than one antivirusscanner or firewall on your system! Several together can give problems and decrease the reliability of it seriously!
Zonealarm, Agnitum Outpost Free OR Kerio are FREE firewalls.

Understanding and using firewalls

So please perform my steps above with the deletion of the files and the extra steps, because this is with a reason I am asking you this.

Post a new hijackthislog afterwards in your next reply.
