Hello!

My Norton 360 has been repeatedly notifying me that it is blocking "overlay.xul (Trojan.Zefarch)". It keeps attacking, though, and Norton seems useless. I need help removing it, please. Also, when I start-up my computer, I keep getting notified that a new add-on has been installed (located under the heading Extensions): XUL Runner 1.9.1, along with a message that it is not compatible with Firefox 3.6.18. Beneath this entry on the list, XUL Runner 1.9.1 is listed several more times as if it keeps installing itself. I don't know if this is related.

This is my first time dealing with anything like this. Your help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

  • Change the "Extra Registry" option to "Use SafeList"
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them into your reply:
  • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
  • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

Next, please download Rootkit Unhooker from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
Link 1 (.exe file)
Link 2 (zipped file)
Link 3 (.rar file)
In order to use this tool if you downloaded from either of the second two links, you will need to extract the RKUnhookerLE.exe file using a program capable of extracing ZIP and RAR compressed files. If you don't have an extraction program, you can downlaod, install and use the free 7-zip utility.

  • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to start the program.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check Drivers, Stealth, and uncheck the rest.
  • Click OK.
  • Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the report into your next reply.
-- Note: You may get this warning...just ignore it, click OK and continue: "Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself! It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?".

Once you have the above logs, click on the Add Reply button below, copy in the contents of the two OTL logs and the RKU log. Also include any comments that you might have concerning the infection(s) and the infected computer.

Hi Shannon!

I really appreciate your help!

After my first post, I was having trouble with Firefox and Explorer. When I turned on my computer the next day and used either browser, I got extra windows popping up. Each time a page loaded when I used Firefox, a separate tab with 4 tabs popped up:
- http://www .xn--&-8ga.com/
- Index of file:///C:/Program Files/ Mozilla Firefox/
- file:///C:/Program%20Files/Mozilla%20Firefox/t%E2%80%98%C3%91%C3...
- http://www. xn--pda.com/
Each time a page loaded when I used Explorer, 2 separate windows popped up, stating invalid syntax error.

I don't know if this info is related/helpful.

Norton is also blocking gmer.exe(Trojan.Gen.2). I'm assuming this is a misdiagnosis from the gmer.exe I needed for the first batch of scans I had to post.

Thanks again for your time!

Hi-

Thank you for the logs. They did show some problems and one was a backdoor trojan. A backdoor trojan allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

If you decide to continue with the cleanup -

First, please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!
Be sure to download TDSSKiller.exe (v2.5.8.0) from Kaspersky's website.
  • Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it.

To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to How to change the file extension.

  • Click the Start Scan button.
  • Do not use the computer during the scan
  • If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
  • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.
  • Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
  • A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. C:\TDSSKiller.2.5.0_23.07.2010_15.31.43_log.txt) will be created and saved to the root directory (usually Local Disk C:).
  • Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.
Next, download Combofix from either of the links below, and save it to your desktop. For information regarding this download, please visit this webpage: how-to-use-combofix

Link 1
Link 2

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

1. Close any open browsers.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

How to Temporarily Disable your Anti-virusl

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please copy the "C:\ComboFix.txt" into your reply.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

In your reply, copy in the contents of the TDSSKiller report and the ComboFix report. How is your computer running now?

Hi.

I don't really use the computer for anything other than entertainment. I changed all of the passwords to important accounts on a different computer just in case, thoug

To reformat, Dell has 2 options:http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins9400/en/om/trouble.htm#wp1306003
1. Using Dell PC Restore by Symantec
2. Using the Operating System CD
Which would you recommend?

If I reformat and reinstall without dong the cleanup first, will the computer be safe again? If so, I think this is the route that I will go. Thanks.

Hi-

Dell PC Restore by Symantec should do the job, and should be much easier and quicker. Why don't you use it, then return here, and I will have you run a couple of scans to make sure you are infection free.

Hey.

I'm having trouble reinstalling. It may take me awhile to figure out. I understand if you have to close the topic, but, is it possible to reopen it once I get this figured out, so, I can do the scans?

Thanks.
